Try finding one that sounds good to you, then mic it for gigs.

The Hot Rod Deluxe is right up your ally. Loud and a nice gigging amp. Used ones are easy to find for less than $500.

You could always find a broken tube amp, buy it, and have it repaired (or repair it yourself to be cheaper).

But for a tube amp for the $100-$500 range...pardon my bluntness but, good luck.

I got my Blues Deluxe RI less than a year ago. Brand New for $585. I think the price has shot up a bit since, but I'm sure you can find something used for $500 or less. It is a great amp.

i did alot of research when i was in the market for a *smaller* tube amp. I ended up with a ValveKing Royal 8. Now maybe its not your cup of tea, but for the price (250ish$ CAD over here) it's super sweet. Of couse i swaped the speaker for a nice old jensen loudspeaker (alnico.. real old school) and put in JJ's to bring it out more. What's really surprising is the fact that i was able to play with drums. The level of sound that this little guy gives out now is ridiculous. I can crank it which ever way i want and it sounds nice and vintage! (3 controls: Gain, Tone, Master)

Now again, this might not be what your looking for (5w needs to get mic'ed for gigs) but on the bang for your buck side it's an interesting little guy.

p!

You can snag a Peavey ValveKing 112 for under $500, and sometimes even the 212 for just barely over $500. The 212 is 100 watts, extremely loud, and just an overall awesome amplifier. I've been gigging with one for over a year now and my tone has never been better. BTW I used to play Marshall or Mesa/Boogie, so saying I prefer the tone of the Peavey is pretty strong words.
The VK 112 is 50 watts and also plenty loud. I just prefer 2x12's, and have found that the texture control on the 212 is more effective.
Also, don't be afraid to look at barely used amps, you an get some great deals on excellent amps that are less then a year old.

If you don't mind hauling around a boat anchor, there's a guy selling a MINT BDRI over on the Harmony Central and The Gear Page forums for $460, PayPal'ed and DELIVERED!

Hot Rod Deluxe is a really good amp, it's cheap if you're buying second hand. It's got a great tone, too.

But I think it'd be best if you actually went and played to make sure that it suits your play style.

I agree with phuot. The Valveking Royal 8 is probably the best low price point tube amp out there today. Much better tone shaping than the other one knobbed wonders. And the headphone out is handy, too. Although it may fall short in the "loud" category.
