It amazes me the number of people who say they can't turn this amp above 2 or 3 in a band setting because it is too loud. I don't gig, but my BDRI clean volume is set right now on 8 ( ) with my Epiphone Les Paul Standard (Burstbucker 1 and 2) plugged into input #1. Its amazing what you can accomplish using the guitar's volume controls.
Yes those controls are useful sometimes. Use them a lot here at home. Who needs an attenuator? Too many people think they have to be full on.

You might be happy with the tone you get rolling around the dials on the guitar but I'm not. My Ric loses everything that makes it a Ric when it's top end disappears, which happens the moment the volume drops off. I do try these things, I just thought the speaker route might be a good option that gave me the outcome I was really looking for.
I really couldn't see any point in having a 40w amp to only use a small amount of that power. It's like having a Porsche in a city centre and never being able to drive above 30mph.

Yet clueless yuppies insist on buy them.

IMO you need a less-powerful amp that you aren't forced to artificially choke in order to enjoy that Ric to its fullest potential.

Hold the phone here- I can use an eq pedal in the loop to tame the volume for home use??

That's a trick I hadn't heard of. That Blues Deluxe sitting in the showroom just got a lot closer to going home with me! I don't gig- I just want THIS amp because it sounds exactly the way I want. The dark voicing, the midrange honk, etc it's all there. And it likes all my favorite guitars and pedals. The trouser flapping volume was the only thing keeping me from buying it. ( and this is at just barely cracked open.)

Yes just turn the volume slider on the EQ Pedal back a bit to suit!

The real funny thing is how everybody thinks you need 40+ watts to play in a band. When I started out in the late 60's, the PA systems were pretty bad. We needed higher wattage amps to be heard. That's where my Twin and Sunn Scepter came in. My hearing suffered because of it. The technology has changed quite a bit now. I do most of my gigs now with either my 5e3 clone or my 20 watt Egnater Rebel. I run two 112 extension cabs and so far it holds up to just about every situation. On a larger stage I'll run my 5e3 and my Rebel at the same time with an A/B/Y box I built from BYOC. It had isolation transformers so it's safe and noiseless switching. Using lower wattage amps allows you to get your amp into its sweet spot. If you play with great musicians, you can play at almost any volume and sound great. The way I look at it now, if I need more than twenty watts for a small stage, I need a new band.

Here's a link to the A/B/Y box if you're interested. It's an easy build too.

So far everyone has been suggesting tube amp alternatives. I do own a Twin Reverb RI and a Deluxe Reverb RI, but also have two Mustang III V2's. If you are having trouble getting the sound you like at the volume you like, I would highly recommend the Mustang III V2. These Mustang amps can be made to sound like an EL84 or EL 34 amp as well as s 6V6 or 6L6 Fender amp. By creating your own sound using the Fender Fuse software or downloading a favorite guitarist or band sound your options are almost endless. And, for the most part the MIII, IV, and V can fit into just about any band situation because of the dual XLR outs that can go into a PA. The volume level on the MIII at 100 watts and 1X12" can fit into practice time as well as small and medium size venues and then XLR connected to the PA for large venues. Amazingly versatile.

There are some Aussies online that do A/B comparisons between a MIII and various other tube amps. I'm tellin' ya, you can't tell the difference! Awesome!
