The issue with my 212R is certainly electrical. If this is the case, why couldn't Fender tell by the serial number the approximate date of manufacture? If it was manufactured within the last five years, Fender should stand by their product and fix it regardless of whether I can furnish a receipt or not. It's apparent that it was Pedro's first day on the job and I ended up with an amplifier with sub-par workmanship.

fwiw, I had to send in a Playstation 2 to Sony a long time ago. I didn't have the receipt. At first the person on the phone said I must have it to get service. But I explained that the warranty is associated with the device, not the person who purchased it, and they honored the warranty.

It could have been a gift, right? I don't see any reason they wouldn't honor the warranty based on the manufacture date only, assuming it hasn't been abused or modified.

Thank you all for the responses. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do about getting a duplicate receipt because like some other small music shops around my state, the local shop I bought it at went out of business sometime in the last few months. Maybe if small shops didn't charge 150% over list price, they may be able to compete with internet sites like Sweetwater or Musician's Friend. I'm all about supporting local businesses, but it's hard to do so when a set of Ernie Ball strings cost 9 or 10 dollars but on Amazon I can almost buy three sets for that price.

Understood. They do usually charge the same as the online guys for guitars and amps. Fender (and others) set an MSRP and a "street price" that "authorized" dealers need to stick to. But for accessories, that's where they have their profit margin and they are free to set their own selling price. The difference, in most small retailers, is that they will spend some time with you because they really want you to be happy with your purchase and come back for more. GC has a steady flow in and out the door so they just want to show lots of product moving out the door. Sam Ash is the same in in their high volume departments. More like a mom and pop if you are looking for a band (brass, woodwind, etc...) instrument.

But give it a try. They may cave in and replace it...

This is why:

IMPORTANT: PLEASE RETAIN YOUR SALES RECEIPT OR LEASE, AS IT IS YOUR PROOF OF PURCHASE COVERING YOUR LIMITED WARRANTY. TO TRANSFER THE WARRANTY TO A SUBSEQUENT PURCHASER, YOU MUST ENDORSE THE SALE OF THE PRODUCT TO THE SUBSEQUENT PURCHASER ON THE FRONT OF THE SALES RECEIPT.

Its not just to prove the date of sale (Manufacture date is irrelevant. The amp could have sat in the shop for 1 year. The warranty covers 5 years from when you purchased it.), but that you are the original owner, or purchased it from the original owner. The Fender warranty is transferrable per these terms. If the amp was a gift, you would still need the receipt to prove ownership.

You might get lucky and find a sympathetic customer service rep who will help you out, so it is worth contacting Fender.

The problem you are describing can be caused by a simple problem with the drive or volume control itself. Usually it starts after pulling off the knob.
You can find out if the control is bad by pulling on all the controls and seeing how much they move. The bad one will move outward more than the others.
The shaft of the control is swaged into a plastic disk inside the control. This is a weak point and allows the wiper of the control to lose contact.
The type of circuit used here uses negative feedback to control the volume and the loss of wiper contact causes the loss of the negative feedback signal to the op amp. So the volume goes to max.
If you pull on the knob slightly, the volume control works.
You can remove the control, remove its cover and push the disk back on the shaft. Secure it with superglue or epoxy and it will work like new.
A replacement can be found at musicpartsguru.com
This is a common issue with SS fender amps of this series. You need to be very careful with pulling the knobs off during servicing. I use two screwdrivers alternately to pry the knobs off slowly and carefully.
