Any chance you can post a sound clip of the amp as you are playing through it with the Ibanez? I am having a hard time grasping exactly what your complaint is. Other than a bad tube, incorrect bias setting, or flat out amp failure, I don't know why the amp should sound this bad to you.

+1

I have my issues with the HR amps (unrelated to this topic) but in all fairness, the clean channel on mine sounded pretty damn good. The only thing that springs to mind at this point is over-use of the amp's presence control in conjunction with the bright switch. Both off those controls used simultaneously with the fizz or more fizz channel will definitely produce a pretty raucous tone.

I have tried the bright switch on and off.. and with the presence high, medium and low. No difference. I have been trying every possible knob configuration for a week now suggested to me from all the big guitar forums but had the same results.

I'm afraid I have no way to record the amp directly as of yet. No Mic. But if you watch this clip of Ben Monder playing the the same guitar through a Fender Deluxe and at 58 seconds into the video clip he plays and there you can here the very same metallic 'chankyness' through the amp.
It's especially clear when he plays the higher strings but when you're in the same room as the amp it's on all 6 strings in all registers. (Youtube clips have obvious audio quality limitations)

It does not sound like a warm jazz guitar.. it sounds like cheese wire.

I even emailed him about this so yes and he replied knowing exactly what I was talking about. So I know I am not imagining things.

This guitar through other amps sounds gorgeous and inspiring, I can sit and play the whole day.

The guitar plugged directly into Logic Pro X also records just fine and with none of that metallic stuff going on.

Here's a short clip, no effects, no compression, no EQ just a tiny bit of reverb.

But in the Fender I can not for the life of me in ten days of owning it get any similar soft or sweet warm sound out of it. This really surprised me as this amp has some of the best reviews I have ever read on any amp and is meant to be famous for it's sweet clear warm tone.

Same AS153 guitar on a Polytone amp... again no metallic tone.

Maxx, that YT clip at 0:58 sounds like speakers to me. Does your amp have ceramic magnet speaker(s)? Sometimes, certain makes/models of these types of speakers have that high-end bite to them. Some ppl like this.

Can you try using your amp through a cab loaded with alnicos? Esp vintage type. A nice Chicago made Jensen would be nice. Just to rule-out the speakers.

Perhaps it's time to cut your losses and simply return the amp to the store for an exchange or a refund.

Hi BMW..

This FHR has the the Celestion G12P-80. From what I have read this speaker is meant to be cheap and nasty.

It was a gift.. bought from another country. Changing it would be an incredibly long and painful process.

Can you try any other cab? Just to see if that characteristic brittle edge changes with the speaker. I think you should rule-out the speaker, first, before any other mods. JMO, of course.

Good luck, anyhow.

The G12P-80 is a speaker with a lot of emphasis on the low end, not much in the way of highs and should sound very warm and jazzy, unless something is wrong with it.

Lots of great suggestions here, and you won't get anywhere just talking about it. Time to try out some of the suggestions.

Another suggestion is to plug your guitar (and effects if used) directly into the "Power Amp In" and check for the same poor sound. Although this will be very low volume, it bypasses the entire preamp section of the amp and might help to isolate the problem to either preamp or output section.

Thank you Rock Star i just tried the pre-amp input but it's not quite it's very loud indeed! None of the amp volume control have any effect on the sound level. Is this normal?

Yes the tone was a little softer and a tad more rounded but not warm at all. It's as though the warm tone is wrapped and coated in tin foil if that makes any sense.

Will drag the amp to my drummers place today and plug in his large 4x4 speaker cabinet and see what that does.

I appreciate everyones replies and suggestions and yes I will do my best to try them all.

The "Preamp Out" is an output, out of the amp to feed a PA or another amp or some effects. I hope that you meant that you plugged into the "Power amp In".

I'll be honest. I don't believe that there is anything wrong with the amp that can't be cured with proper use of the tone controls (both amp and guitar) and perhaps improved playing technique. Until we can hear the actual amp and guitar in question, there is no way to effectively evaluate the problem. This is not a case of an amp playing with gross distortion, not loud enough, etc. This is one person's perception of tone that apparently is not the desired tone.
