V5 PI tube - My King acts a little queen-ish when I put a balanced Tung-Sol 12AX7 in. She goes a little ballistic, like you are touching the tip of your cable when you unplug the cable from the guitar! I have tried multiple Tung-Sols so I know its not the tube. Seems to work fine with a GT-12AX7-R, issue, not knowing if it's balanced as I believe it is the original factory tube. Anyone had experience on this one?

No, two different sources. Also, pulled one from a known good working amp, basically the same tube.

A "weak" tube could work fine in V1 and not in Vx . And different amps or/ and circuits may ask not same performance from the same tube .

So far, the unofficial answer is if you find something that works, stay with it, as long as the sound is not compromised. According to Fender, a balanced Triode tube is not required in this position. I was under the impression that it was highly recommended for the phase inverter. I am still at a loss, but at least the amp still sounds great.

I never buy a balanced PI tubes and never had any problem and I fix many amps since many years . But today's tube are not reliable

You mean the amp makes a buzzing noise with the Tungsol RI 12AX7? Are you plugging the tube in with the amp on?

Yes, as described, horrific buzzing noise with a Tungsol balanced Triode 12AX7. No, everything is powered down, make the swap. Flip out of standby, 3-4 seconds later BOOM!

Do me a favor and try that TSRI 12AX7 (that buzzes), briefly, in the V1 or input position. Place a good tube into the PI position. If it's the TS is bad, the buzz maybe even louder.

If the TS 12AX7 is ok in V1... time to check the socket in that PI position.

JOC... are the pins of the TS 12AX7 straight? Bent pins can sometimes cause issues. Also, are the pins smaller diameter than the "good" tube pins? Some Chinese and Ei made tubes, esp gold plated ones, have fatter pins. These can distort the socket tangs, so that thinner pins don't contact well.

Pins are very straight. I'm thinking you are on the right track with a socket issue. Come to think of it, I have been able to actually touch the tip of the tube when it is in (making all its racket) and everything stops (the noise, that is). What do you think?

OK... DeOxit time. Get some good contact cleaner. I like DeOxit DN5 or GN5. Apply lightly to sockets and tube pins. Work the tube in-&-out of socket a couple of times. Wipe off excess. This usually does the job.

Good luck! Keep us informed!

I have used DeoxIT D5 on all tube pins, then gently working tubes in and out of the sockets, ensuring that residual left on pins or in sockit pin holes. Still thinking socket replacement. Sure won't hurt!

Well, if that socket is still hinky after DeOxit --- you can try tightening the tangs with a dental probe or a thin sharp awl. May or may not work. Perhaps, a new socket is the best answer.

Good luck with the amp!
