Okay,

My replacement tubes are a touch thinner than the EL84s that came with the amp and the retainer doesn't quite fit. It sits at a bit of an angle and the tubes slowly navigate towards the side under more tension.

Do I actually need this? Can I just bend the metal out to fit the fatter tubes? Is there a better mechanism to use?

The retainer is to keep the tubes from falling out, but why does one side have more tension? There should be two springs. If the tubes are just a little bit crooked (not sure why they would be) it won't hurt anything. How are your new tubes "a touch thinner" and "fatter" at the same time?

Thinking one sentence and typing another.

The new tubes are thicker.
