Hi folks. Newbie here. Just registered a few weeks ago! Not sure if this is the proper place to post but I'll give it a try.

I have a couple of the "old" Cyber Champ amps (for me, at 60+ years old, these amps are easy to lift and offer me enough tonal options without dragging along stomp boxes so I prefer to use them over my 1964 Fender Princeton Reverb which I've had for 35 yrs!).

Anyway, the problem that I'm facing is that the Cyber Champ amp doesn't seem to have a line out option which I didn't think about when I bought them. When needed, I've been miking the amps with a SM57 but folks are telling me that it's not a difficult thing for an amp techie to wire up a line out jack so I can connect directly to the PA board! I'm told that this would not in any way affect the sound I get from the amp and speaker. Not being a techie, I'm cynical so I'd like to get some guidance about this, pro and con.

Getting rid of the microphone suits me just fine but I do not want to risk ANY dimunition in the sound or tone coming from the amps. If the consensus is that this is not a problem, is there a good (and bad!) way to accomplish this? Can the headphone input jack be re-wired in some manner to accomplish this without bypassing the amp's speaker? Since the chassis is sealed from the back, I'm guessing that hooking up a separate line out jack in the back would not be advisable? But what is advisable?

Thanks in advance for your expertise.

Read the owner's manual, page 6, "Phones".

Thanks Bluesky but from what I understand, connecting to the headphone jack results in bypassing the amp's speaker, something I'm trying to avoid. Am I right?

Testing bluesky's theory presents no risk -- give the headphone jack a try and see what happens.

Fair enough. As soon as I put a guitar cable in the headphone input, the amp went silent so it's a bypass jack (which makes sense since it's intended for headphones!).

Swapping the original receptacle for a standard stereo headphone jack should keep the amp's speaker "live" while providing a line-level output for a stand-alone mixing board or recording device.

I know this is a silly question... so bear with me. Why would you want both headphones and speakers operating together? Is this a studio kinda thing?

Thanks!

My thoughts exactly.

I was curious about this as well. For recording, it's usually better to mike up the speaker. If you are thinking about home practice, you want the speaker silenced.

Maybe its possible to hook up some kind of switch to get both? Just a thought.

The gentleman's reasons are right there in black and white......for all who care to read.

Thanks Arjay for recognizing what I am hoping to accomplish and for making what sounds like a good suggestion. For those who missed my point, when jamming with friends in a live setting, I simply want to be able to add a line level out from the amp to the mixing board while not losing the sound of the speaker (which would occur if I plugged a cable into the headphone jack). That way I can get some sonic balance through the PA speakers while still being able to hear myself through my amplifier. Arjay's suggestion (to swap the original headphone receptacle for a standard stereo headphone jack) might be the way to go. Frankly I'm not sure what a "standard stereo headphone jack" is or how it differs from what's on the amp currently (mono headphone jack??) but this is something I can look into (pending additional informed responses from forum folks).

Yours is a "switching jack", CCD. What that means is, there is an additional independent set of contacts within the jack which normally remain closed when no plug is inserted into it. This set of contacts controls another function -- in your amp's case it's the signal being fed to the power-amp module that feeds audio to the speaker. When the headphones are connected via the jack, this extra set of contacts opens -- which renders the power amp inert because the input signal has been interrupted.

HTH

Hopefully someone has a schematic for the amp as I can't find one on any of the usual sites.
