never said I wanted 2000 or any dollar figure tone, didnt say I wasnt happy with either of my amps, just said several times that some guitars sound better thru certain amps than others. Now I will say catagorically that to buy a new fender tube amp and mod it, is, for most people, ridiculous. If you dont like the sound of an amp youve bought you shouldnt have bought that particular amp,but rather, an amp you like the sound of to begin with, UNLESS you your self are a trained tech or youll chase something you wont catch, and make parts sellers rich flogging stuff people dont need.Buy want you like, try an amp with your own guitar and leave the stock amps alone!!!! one mans opinion
ps I really like both my amps factory stock, kudos to fender for making them reguardless of comparisons to vintage examples, and I enjoy the debates and different opinions voiced here, cheers J

The sole point on which we can both agree.

Which is why I don't (buy a new Fender tube amp, that is).

I'm quite content with my fourteen vintage Fenders.

But I do know how to wring the best tone possible from the re-issues. And tube-rolling, optimizing an idle-bias setting, or swapping speakers is not a "mod" IMO.

And if you have no desire to get the best from what you've already spent your hard-earned money on then why are you here wasting bandwidth on this forum? Sniveling accomplishes nothing.

Good day to you, sir.

Arjay

here we go! I am not sniveling I am voicing my opinion, and isnt that what forums are for. AGAIN I say my point was and is that not all guitars sound good thru all amps, AND just because you disagree DOSNT give you the right to imply I am whinning, especially because it makes you seem nasty and unaccepting of other peoples opinions, so maybe you should find a venue where only like minded people discuss ideas cheers J

personal emails dont enlighten people,so lets keep it public, I value most info and opinions here, if I was unhappy with my amp ( Im not ) this place would point me in some good directions to good advice, I was just trying to say-I REPEAT- I think that not all guitars sound good thru all amps, , if you disagree with my opinion on this just say so, i think sometimes modding wont help and its not just that an amp or guitar needs to be changed. I feel that I wasnt wasting time or snivelling period. and that saying I was was a personal insult, and trying to use private email is not what this forum is about, thanks anyway and again cheers j

but it wasnt the amp!!! recently I picked up an epi es 339 and got her home and plugged into my 65 prri and man ,I was ready to return the git or fix the amp within 2 minutes ! Then I plugged into my Deville 4x10 and instant heaven. I love my princeton,it loves my strat, but it dosnt love every guitar, I guess Im saying that if your amp sounds bad with a new git try another amp before you get crazy and return the git OR mod your amp fwiw j

You did not say what you didn't like about the PRRI tone with the Epi... what exactly made it sound bad?? Too harsh? Too muddy? No clean headroom? What??

IMO, a healthy amp, with the right tubes and bias all dialed in, should sound good regardless of the guitar. All it takes is a few adjustments to the tone when switching from single coil to humbuckers. I play both and I always drop the bass to zero and turn up the treble when I plug a 335 or 345. I even had an Epi 345 that I played through my PR, not a RI, and had no problem getting great tone out of it. I plug straight in, I don't use pedals.

My Flying V through the PR dimed gets me some nasty Albert King tone!

I had a DeVille 4X10 a few years ago, nice amp and I thought it sounded good... until I plugged into a SR. The DeVille was gone the next day

Listen to what these guys are telling you. Check your bias, make sure the amp is healthy... if you think your Strat sounds good through it now, wait 'til you get the amp dialed in! We're not talking mods here, it just needs a "tune-up".

I also find that certain guitars sound best with certain amps. For example, Am Std or '62 HR, both with single coils, into a Laney Cub 10 sounds great, while the Blacktop with hum-buckers just doesn't sound nearly as good through the same amp. The same Blacktop is perfect with a MB TA-15, while the Am Std or '62 HR into the same amp sounds weak/thin.

I'm sure that the use of some pedals might help get the sounds that I like from nearly any amp/guitar combination, but I don't use pedals, so I just match guitar and amp for the perfect sounds to fit the mood.

I wouldn't say that any of my amps or guitars sound poor, just that some combinations sound better than others.

Also, some amps can sound great with just about any guitar. The HRDlx can be dialed in to sound great with every guitar that I've tried.

The player can make a huge difference too, some are even good enough to make a less-than-stellar guitar and amp sound killer. I certainly don't have that skill. :(

Of course there's no accounting for taste. One man's poor sound is another man's tone heaven.

thanks to the folks trying to save the thread from a sheet storm, I retubed and had the bias adjusted a while ago on the princeton, and am very happy with it, just not thrilled with the sound from the epi, the epi is an inexpensive guitar and its fun, sounds ok for what it is, and maybe the pick ups could be better, taste is taste BUT it just dosnt sound that great TO MY EARS thru the prri. AS far as bad gear with a great player I know for sure the best players started with crappy gear and soon sounded awesome and could still make sweet heavenly tones even with my epi and prri as is,or any thing else requardless of quality but I cant and wouldnt find it worth messing with either when the other amp makes it sound great, I guess also, I think sometimes people can over spend chasing tone while dropping bucks and end up still not happy -again thanks to all cheers J
