I am following up on a little nudge from Shimmi.

I got the Hughes and Kettner tubemiester 5 watt amp on Thurs. So, I've had a chance to hear and use it a bit. I am very happy with this amp.

I wanted a small tube amp that would give me what my Bugera V5 did not and I got it. Big time. I am still working with the stock tubes. The preamp tube is a 12AX7B, made in China. I know the 12AX7B's are supposed to have more gain but, it is tone that really matters with this amp. I will get around to experimenting. The 12BH7 is a new tube for me. I like the tone a lot. I will look for something to try out in that spot at some point. Right now, nothing is missing for me.

The EQ is very responsive and capable of great subtlety. Although other amps are capable of this, I guess, I have never experienced such fine tune-ability. Perhaps because it is a personal type amp capable of sitting on my computer tower where it is in my face at eye level. I just find myself able to find the sweet spot very easily. Even taking into account that every tweak effects the whole, reconfiguring is easy.

Playing a real tube amp through headphones is delicious. I have the red box plugged into my Lexicon Alpha computer interface. The input gain and headphone volume add another layer for fine tuning the sound for listening and/or recording.

Enough words. I will post the pic of it sitting on my puter in my room. I also have three soundcloud clips I made with the amp. They are three different song ideas, not full songs. Guitar only. They were made to demonstrate songs, not the amp but, they are amp demos by default.

Hell I'd swear you were playing through a Vibro Champ, modwiz!.

Very credible, very pleasing tone. With a nice S/N ratio to keep your guitar at the forefront and focused.

Ya done good, kid......and I like your strumming style as well

Rawk on!

8)

BTW, was that done D/I'd directly into a recording device or through a miked speaker? And if the latter, what speaker?

Thanks, Arjay.

Just from the direct/red box out, into my Lexicon mixer which was recorded on audacity.

A little hall effect reverb with a smidge of UltraVibe (Hardwire Tremelo/Rotary pedal).

I do have a self made cab with a Weber Alnico Sig 8" (ribbed). I was getting great Vox type tones from that. I play it through a CRex and it sounds great. Little 8" speaker great. This tubemeister is a tone meister for my tastes.

UPDATE:
Just looked at an EC Vibro Champ. It has the same 8" speaker I mention above.

Forty three dollar (retail) speaker in a thousand dollar amp.

What do I know?

The alnico Weber Sig 8 is one of the preferred speaker upgrades for anyone with an AA764 Champ, Vibrochamp, or Bronco so I'm not surprised that you find its tone to be tasty. Compared to the bread-and-butter OEM Oxford used in those single-ended Fender's, the Weber is finger-lickin' good!

At Sweetwater it is. I just saw it for $400 at zzounds. I am loving it. It is a personal amp like I've never had. It doesn't just make recording easy, it makes it sound great.

I could not resist it at $300. Won't be regretting this GAS. And although it has only one power tube, which is a preamp tube, it uses the dual triode in a push/pull configuration like and A/B amp would. This amp has a ton more subtlety than a straight class A. This amp just has a different sound that lends to creativity in a private space, IMO.

My HRD III belongs on a stage or in a rehearsal studio. This stays by my side. I like the aesthetics too.

Nice playing Wiz, and you are giving me GAS. The tone of the thing is real nice especially for the direct out.

I have to put up a nice 'crunchy' sample. I am not a lead guitar player but, I have some country-rock type chord patterns that would demonstrate the drive sound well. Although I was using some subtle drive in one of the samples. I used it more for 'fat' than crunch.

The clean can be made 'drivey' and the drive can be cleaned up. It is more about the way the tone stack shifts that makes me pick one or the other. I have never had the opportunity to sit and play through a tube amp at all hours, so I am getting some serious time spent in understanding the nuanced tonal interactions between guitar volume and tone and the master/gain/EQ of the amp. I am finding so much to work with.

The three hundred dollar price is a gift for any who might find this amp as something they can find utility with. I have my performance/band practice amps, this is for other things.

Sweetwater will even let you pay 100.00 a month for three months. They do charge a 10.00 fee for that so it would be 103.33 a month. :D

I have been looking at the Tubemeister 18 watt head which would play in any decent sized club room. Plus my Hot Rod Deluxe would play any room I will ever play out in. The SCX2 just might go on Craigslist, I am not totally pleased with the SCX2 especially after playing the HRD through the C-Rex which is the most awesome tone all around that I have ever gotten (according to my taste in tone that is) That Tubemeister 18 watter through one of my EVM12L's would sound awesome.

I have barely played my SCX2 since getting the HRD. With the Tubemeister I am not playing the HRD much but, using the cab for the CRex to run the tubemiester through. That sound was great.

Might hold onto the SCX2 but, the Bugera V5 is outta here.

I like the line out of the SCX2 because it is post effects. I can also see it as and grab a go thing. It is not a Princeton but, it can fake it a bit. :D

Bought one. Nice. It is ridiculously tiny. Seems to have a ton of headroom and likes my partscaster much more than the blues jr did.

I'm playing it through my blues jr speaker and that is working pretty well. Next operation is to split the Blues Jr into head and cab.

Pleased.
