Obviously a design defect, Steve......I'll give you ten bucks for the lot (but only if you pick up the S&H costs).

If you're getting a new amp, make sure you understand the retailer's return policy. The new Fender '68 Custom amps had some problems at first, and I got a '68 Custom Deluxe and had to return a couple to get one that works right (and it does sound sweet). If you can't return a defective new amp, the guarantee will cover repairs, but you don't want an amp you've had a day to sit in the shop for a month or two.

Word!

I'm still waiting for that Vintage Modified '68 Vibrolux Reverb to show up. If it performs satisfactorily to my expectations I might break down and buy one......

I'd go for a Vintage SF. For $1500, you can find a fairly nice one if you're patient.

So far as refurbishing/rebuilding, I just finished my '67 Deluxe and it wasn't bad at all. Several good people here gave me some guidance and the work was actually fun !

The result?

WOW !!!

And I have an amp which is good to go probably for decades.
