I have come to the conclusion that I want a tube amp. I have narrowed my choices to either a Peavey Delta Blues 115 or a Fender Blues Jr NOS. Prices are comparable, features are close, availability of both are good. I know that the DB is 30 watt vs Bjr's 15, and that for my purposes the portability of the Bjr is not a plus or a minus because I don't play out. I would appreciate any and all opinions, praise, hacks, and or reviews of both. Thanks for your time-

Between the two, I'd prefer the Peavey Delta Blues if only because it doesn't sound so damn boxy. I'm also a fan of fifteen-inch speakers so that makes it a no-brainer in my book. It doesn't do traditional Fender cleans but neither does the Blues Jr. It has a somewhat unique sonic vibe that falls somewhere between a vintage '50s tweed and a Vox AC15/30.

If portability isn't a factor, go with the US made Peavey. :)

I also agree that the Peavey Delta is the way to go. Like Lou said American made. I've played a few in different situations and think they sound great. No mods needed to get some great sounds out of it.

Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum. Advantage the BJr has is weight. 31 vs almost 60 (yikes). A nice compromise is the Classic 30. I have always liked the 2x10 version of the Delta Blues. The NOS doesnt sound nearly as boxy as the standard version and with a extention cabinet it can sound pretty decent especially with humbuckers.

+1... these and the Peavey Classics are great tube amps! I miss my Classic 30, my Blues Jr... not at all. I've had a chance to use the Delta Blues on a few occasions and love it. Of course, if you can do a hands-on comparison with your own guitar that's ideal but I'd agree with Arjay, the Peavey is a great choice!

Way-ell......(petulantly rubbing the nape of my neck)

A buddy of mine bought a new Delta 30 about a decade ago and played it dead-stock for about a year. It sounded "okay" but the OEM Sheffield never did mellow out in the manner that we all imagine a loudspeaker should. He brought it to me for servicing and a general tune-up a year or so after purchase and after "rolling" some tubes, the amp's tone improved but only marginally. I finally convinced him to swap out the original driver for a vintage Jensen 16-ohm C15N. Sonically, the difference was absolutely immediate and remarkable. Thus I agree that the amp has great fundamentals but with that single caveat regarding the factory speaker. And in retrospect, I think similar results could be achieved by installing an Eminence Big Ben.

I also say the peavey. 15 watts isn't a lot of power if you ever start playing out or in a band and want to retain a clean tone.

I consider a new speaker more of an upgrade than a mod, tubes to. BillM makes a few bucks modding and selling mods for the Blues Jr. With the stock Sheffield, some people like em some don't. I'd probably shove a Weber in there. Any way you look at it, it's still a better sounding amp even in its stock form IMO.

Absolutely. And parsecs ahead in the reliability department.

"features are close"....not IMO.

The only advantage of the BJr. (portability) doesn't matter to you, and neither does the increased wattage, so the decision seems simple to me...Delta Blues.
