Hey..what's up, i bought a fender 65' twin reverb amp 5 years ago and i wanna change the tubes , but i'm a little confused because there are different kind of tubes, for example one type of tube is 12ax7 R and searching about it on ebay, i found a 12ax7 R2 type and some other stuff, i wanted to know what is the difference, if the r2 or S are compatibles of it has a variation in sometheing, i'm also confused about the 6L6 GC tubes (the paper that indicate the tube models say that, but the paper that is in the amp says that it has a groove 6L6R and it says red 10 below) i can't find those tubes, i've seen other models (also 6L6 but GT that say 7 or 4 instead red 10) and i've also seen that model in electro harmonix but only like 6L6GC, my question is if that models are compatible and in what will affect the change of tubes, what i want is recover the quality of the amp ... just how it sounds when i bought it. Thanks! and sorry for my english, I speak spanish.

I'm from Lima - Perú, and it's a little difficult get some specific things like those tubes!

Hi jaisontovar,

All brands of 12AX7 will generally be interchangeable with any other brand of 12AX7, there are just different types and brands that will each have a different kind of sound.

Same with 6L6GC, all brands will generally be interchangeable, each with its own type of sound.

Your amp also has a couple of 12AT7 (V3, V6), and in these positions you should use a 12AT7 (not a 12AX7), and all 12AT7 brands are interchangeable with any other brand of 12AT7.

The GT rating system for breakup (distortion), are what the numbers 1-10 indicate on your tubes. 1 will have the earliest breakup, and the tubes will be cleaner as the numbers get higher, 10 being the cleanest. The lower numbers give you breakup at a lower volume. If you want it to sound just as it sounded when you bought it, use the same tubes for replacements. Otherwise, you can experiment and find the tone that you like from available tubes.

The preamp tubes (the small ones) are plug and play, but when changing output tubes (the large ones) you should check the bias.

There are so many different brands of tubes, you can find something for just about any taste.

AFAIK, the 12AX7R and R2 are two variants of Russian made 12AX7. The "R" version are short plate variety that resemble the box-plate Sovtek labeled 12AX7WA. Not the best 12AX7, but often used for its low microphonic and other low noise character.

The "R2" appears more like the dark plate Mullard reissued Russian 12AX7. Cleaner mids and highs. Not the clarity of the Tungsol RI 12AX7.

The EH 6L6GC is a fine tube. As is the Tungsol STR-6L6GC.

All tubes are interchangeable in Fender amps --- in the correct, original positions. You should check bias and adjust whenever changing ANY output tube.

+1

I've used both brands with excellent results. Be sure to specify a matched quartet when ordering and as BMW2002ti mentioned, the idle bias will need to be checked (and if required, adjusted).

thanks for your support, well, basically i bought this amp to record clean guitars and to play some funk stuff, my main problem is that i play different kinds of music and when i use my overdrive or my distortion (maxon od9+ and riot suhr) it has a fly sound (similar to connect any pedal direct to the console, well not exactly but something like that). A friend told me that it was because the tubes were wasted, I only have this amp , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5mBmQax-kI if I could get this sound or similar (when he uses the distortion and the overdrive in the 1.30 min)i would be happy.

Another question that I have is if its difficult to configurate the bias.
