Hey all,

First time poster. I know what I am about to say is widely regarded as sacrilege, but my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Tube Amp is just to darn loud for what I need it for nowadays. My wife, first born daughter, second daughter on the way, and neighbors don't appreciate my amp going to 11 any longer.

I have a Gretsch hollowbody 1959 re-issue that sounds effin great through the thing for fingerstyle guitar. Can any give me any advice on how to be able to play this thing without the volume? I am primarily an acoustic player, and literally know nothing about amps other than "plug guitar in here and turn on". Can someone explain it to me like I am five on what I need to quiet this thing down and still get that great sound? I know that higher volumes drive the tubes and get that great warm tone.

My brother is a rock and roller and has borrowed this amp for gigs, and even he says it's pretty effin loud compared to his Marshall solid state, and other amps he has played.

I'm not even sure if I have any options. I've tried reading forums and there appears to be some ways, but I don't understand all the jargon, I don't understand what a pre-amp is, what a line out is, or any of that stuff. I just get even more confused.

Headphones would be great, but this amp doesn't have a jack labeled "headphones", so it's beyond my pay grade at this point. Is there a work around? I've read about attenuator's that appear to accomplish what I need?

Any advice? What are my options?

Thanks in advance.

Jdahlen,

Two words: Vibro-Champ. Ok, one hyphenated word.

Silverface era VC basically have the same circuit as the BF era VC's.

Just buy an attenuator like Weber Mass

Hello BMW2002Ti , no . I never see this before your post . May be useful if people sleeping at home but with my Weber Mass I can play at any low volume I need and as important feature ; good for any speaker marching .

I like the Weber stuff. Besides their speakers I use a Weber Z-Matcher that matches my amps with different speaker cabs. I use it a lot with my SF Champ to run it through either a 16 ohm 112 or 8 ohms loads with either two 112 cabs or a single 8 112 I have.

The Weber Mass sounds good too. The THD Hotplate is good too. Just be aware to get one rated for the proper wattage and that pushing your amp hard through an attenuator can be really hard on your tubes. If you push your amp to power tube failure you can take out just more than the tubes. You can take out your screen grid resistors and other components as well. I would actually go with either the Weber Headphone Tap or just get one of the amazing low wattage amps that are around. If I didn't have so many low wattage amps, I would pick up a VHT Special 6 or one of the one watt amps out there. One watt is still pretty loud through a 12" speaker and great for practice.

THD sound good , good for only one speaker impedance and more expensive.
