I have a BDRI that when powered on even with all controls at 0 makes a very loud humming/buzzing noise. The level of the noise does not change with any volume or gain controls. Also when I plug into the amp there is no input from my guitar. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If the noise truly does not change with the volume and gain controls, the problem would seem to be in either the phase inverter or power tube stage. Could be a bad tube or faulty ground. Have you tried changing either V3 or V4/5?

Also, could be a bad main filter cap(s). How old is the amp?

Doubtful. He's getting audible hum to the speakers but no guitar signal.

Like Bill, I think it's tube-related.

Arjay,

A bad main cap in first filter stage or grounding in this part of the circuit may let a lot of 120Hz into the amp. IME, when this happens you get loud hum at a constant volume. With or without input.

Constant 60Hz hum is usually a heater line related issue. Or issues with the power transformer wiring. 60Hz hum is below an open low E string. 120Hz is around an open A string.

All tubes are brand new. I thought about a possible grounding issue but I haven't been able to locate a problem. You're also correct about the hum being around 120Hz.

dead_p00l,

How old is the amp? I've seen kinda cheesy electrolytic caps used in some mid 1990's DRRI's. Generic, off-shore variety. These amps seem to benefit from quality replacements.

Pull the cover off your cap's doghouse. Do you have a cap tester on your DVM?

It's a 2004 model if I'm not mistaken and I don't have a cap tester.

It's a Blues Deluxe RI, Steve.

Didn't the BDRI first come out in the mid 1990's? Anyhow, it sure sounds like a main PSU cap or grounding issue. 2004, is kinda new for a cap to be going out. But, I've heard of filter caps going out soon after being installed.

Rule-out other potential issues, first. But, keep the filter caps in mind.

The Blues Deluxe came out in the early 90s and was discontinued after a few years. The Blues Deluxe REISSUE came out in the early 2000s. Mine is a 2010 or so.
