I needed to get a couple of new capacitors for my '65 SRRI. I was trying to figure out what to buy, and went with the recommendations of a member here.

I just happened upon this site--- http://www.aqdi.com/tonecap.htm --- about half an hour ago. It was very, very interesting to compare the sounds of capacitors of identical measured capacitance. Unless the authors are fudging the results, there's no difference in sound between the various materials.

I'd be anxious to hear what some of the much more learned members have to say.

We just did this, and yes, there is a difference in sound between capacitor types, depending on application. That is all!

So many flaws in that "study", I don't quite know where to start.

Firstly, the graphs shown on the first page are obviously slightly different, else all lines would look as one line. So to state "no difference" indicates absolute blindness. Besides the graph being absolutely useless as far as showing a cap response at a given frequency. so I doubt that the graph is even really from any kind of worthwhile test.

Secondly, we don't generate only one frequency at a time from a guitar, and caps react differently to a complex waveform from a guitar signal. The different responses of each cap type would show up more clearly had they shown the different charging rates of the various types.

A capacitor in a guitar or amp will be preceded by, and followed by other components, which will further influence the caps response. At least the graphs on the other thread are clearly more believable graphs that do show quite a difference in responses of various caps. Something that is not pointed out in any of these "studies", is that a guitar signal starts with an inductor, in which the voltage leads the current, whereas with a cap the current leads the voltage. So, to put an inductor with a cap will alter the response of the cap more than just putting a tone generator on a cap.

Almost forgot, in their "conclusion" section they go on to state that different caps have different properties such as microphonics, leakage, and stability. Certainly these are some of the attributes for different types of caps, so how can they state "no difference in tone" with a straight face.

There are so many more factors to a caps response in a circuit, so nothing has been "busted" by these clowns, except their credibility.

Great reply. I listened to the audio clips from the thread you referenced. Lots of differences between those capacitors.

agreed. I wouldn't put too much faith in it.
