Since we're gushing about the C-Rex, and hemp cones, I'll put in a good word for it's "big" (heavy) brother: the Alnico Canis Major. It's sounds ALOT like the C-rex, just not as stiff, it has some of that sweet alnico compression, which is great... in the right amp. The only problem is, if you're putting it in a combo, make sure it'll fit first! Big magnet/bell cover. Won't fit in my Super-sonic 22, which is why I went with the C-Rex.

Yes, the Canis Major. Just a few dollars more than the Weber 10" hemp alnico. Hmm.
:?:

I do like alnico and ceramic pairing. What a sweet chorus of the same signal getting two different voicings. I've paired them to aural ecstasy  with my Emi 820H and a Weber Signature 8" alnico. I've yet to hear it with 12" or 10" speakers.

Have to end this post. I'm drooling.

Can the Canis Major's motor cover be removed, ruger9?

I know on several of the old Jensens the magnet shield is held in place by a single screw tapped into the center of the structure. Removing it might yield sufficient space for use in tight quarters. The Tone Tubby suffers from a similar dilemma -- great speaker but often a very tight squeeze (its cover is not as easily removable).

I don't think you'll be disappointed, modwiz. I'd like to see Eminence offer their Canis Major as a fifteen -- I bet it would do well with a Vibroverb or (in a 4-ohm configuration) mounted in a 1 x 15 tone-ring Showman cab and mated to a Bandmaster or Bassman head. One can only imagine the "nasty" it would produce when driven hard.

I like 15' as a guitar speaker. Owned an Excelsior for a few days. Bad tube socket aside, a simple tone pot can work if it is a good one with something to work with. I did not like the stock speaker.

The Vibroverb with a hemp 15" speaker would be a 'must have' amp. The other configurations too.

I've always wanted to do that, but I haven't owned multi-speaker combo/cab since selling my ol' Peavey Classic 50.

I'm not sure... there's no screw... it seems to be "clamped" on, like the Webers... I didn't ask Eminence, but it's worth an email.

Even tho I'll be selling the amp I was using the CM in, I'll be keeping the speaker... I'm starting to learn when you find a speaker you LOVE, even if you fall out of love with the amp, KEEP THAN DAMN SPEAKER!!! I'll always regret getting rid of the V30's I had from the early 90s... so sweet...

+1

Those UK-made V30's were the best Celestions of all their ceramic models.

I've heard some pretty sweet-sounding alnico Gold's and I wouldn't mind owning a couple......
