Ouí, mon amí.

Just about all manufacturing industries operate under this planned-obsolescence protocol. We at the "user level" do not like it but that's the way it is......a big merde sandwich.

That is the only way to made very low cost gear . If you are lucky you'll use them many years with no problem .

"If you are lucky" is not a strategy.

OK, mes amis, here is my situation as it stands. Once I got all my pedals configured on a powered board, I tried them all setting the amp as clean as possible. That is, no special (digital/computerized) effects on, nor was the included foot switch attached, using all quality cables. And voila, it all seemed to work over a prolonged period of time. That is news one. News two is that this model has been discontinued, but where available (i.e., Guitar Center) they have deeply discounted it from the original $799 US to $499, and will take an excellent condition one in trade for a mere $200 (if you're lucky).
So...it would seem the advice to either live with it, or start looking for a replacement is right on. What do you guys thing about the 68 Twin Reverb, if and when I can dig up that kind of cash, that is :?:

Do you legitimately need an 85-watt platform weighing 70+ lbs?

To be honest, no, I certainly don't need all that power and definitely don't need all that weight (especially with my herniated disks and sciatica). You're echoing just my GC contact is saying, the trend today being smaller and lighter. But, since as far back as the the late 60's, I've always WANTED one. And, the '68 Custom version features a Vintage channel and what I need now, a Custom channel (bassman stack config) for all my newly organized pedals via powered pedal board.
It's going to be real stretch financially, and may not happen, but I'm feeling like giving it a shot. No backers, eh? Can't blame you, it does seem kind of wasteful and overly self-indulgent. But, then again, that's the way it's always seemed to be with me, one instrument or accessory seems to beget yet another.

Why don't you give that new VM '68 silverface Deluxe Reverb a listen? You might just be surprised. And your back will thank you (your chiropractor might not be thrilled though).

Thanks, Arjay, sage advice indeed. Only time (and finances) will tell which side of the fence I wind up falling on.

I gigged a Twin Reverb exclusively for nearly twenty-five years, until I discovered that I seldom really needed that much power. Twenty to forty watts is adequate for most small-to-medium sized venues. And the smaller platform can be miked if need be.

Well, I did it. I fell on the side of indulging myself in something I've wanted for a long, long time: I sold them back the Deluxe VM and I bought from them the Twin Reverb. I know, I know. I listened to some of the advice earlier in this thread, but not all of it. Afterwards, I eye-balled the other (smaller/lighter/one-speaker) amp suggested and had to agree, it would have served my purposes (and it was $200 cheaper too). UPS "delivered" the package (i.e., dragged) to my door and it opened up in the process (did you know that amps are boxed upside down?). But, there didn't seem to be any damage. I tried it out clean, and then with all my pedals. It's got oomph alright, especially in my bedroom, so volume was kept at about 2 the whole time. But, there's an annoying 60-cycle hum that gets worse when the pedal board is attached. I got something to help with that, but have yet to test it out. Also, I tried multiple times to register the new amp using the website, but have yet to be successful ("error on page" with no specifics). BTW, it's "only" 64 pounds. :D

When you heave that imported Jensen junk and replace them with a pair of alnico JBL's that "64 lbs" becomes close to a hundred right quick.

Yikes, now THAT's way too heavy for me (although I must admit, my chiropractor would be a happier man going forward). I'm really pushing it with what I've got now, and I've mounted it atop an inexpensive but sturdy Phono 50 keyboard amp I got for free when I bought the Hammond XK-1 portable organ from MF awhile back. I sat on it first and it took my 220 lbs just fine, so I knew it would support the twin reverb as long as I centered it accurately, etc. That puts the controls within reach so as not to further strain my delicate back!
