Deluxe VM purchased in 2009 was very rarely used and for only very short periods. Now that I am starting to really work it, I am finding that after about twenty minutes of use, I am getting a loud popping noise and sound loss, only to return a few seconds later. Soon after, the process is repeated. A grounded extension cord is being used, overdrive is being used, and result is the same regardess of guitars used: Gibson LP 60s Tribute, Epi LP Class w/burstbuckers, Fender VG Strat and Fender Acoustic/Electric. Anybody know what's up with that? Thanks.

Check all tubes and replace the wrong one .

Could be a broken solder in circuit too .

I'm no techie and never tinkered with the inner workings of any of my amps over the years. Anyway, I will give it a try and see what happens.
Merci beaucoup, mon ami (three years of high school French back in 66-69, what can I say).

I agree because the issue has actually become worse. Now, the amp will not even power up, even though the fuse looks OK. So, I will probably be heading out to Guitar Center from whom I had originally purchased this then experimental model. Of course, I will call ahead to discuss as they are not exactly right around the corner. BTW, your English is just fine, don't sweat it. Thanks again for your helpful reply.

brickster1027,

You can try one thing and it won't void the warranty. Get some good contact cleaner (I like DeOxit GN5). Pull all connectors and plugs. Spray a LITTLE onto every contact surface of the connections (like tube pins and the sockets).

Work the fluid into the connections by inserting and removing each connection a couple of times. Dry off the excess. Hope this helps!

Update: I just got the amp back from the regional repair shop and after several hours of bench testing and playing using the overdrive, tech says he could not find any issues. FYI, the power issue was apparently a mistake of mine in that when I tried to check the fuse, I apparently did not reseat it correctly. He suggested there may have been a short in one of the new (Monster) cables I was using ("NEVER use a molded cable").

Anyway, I'm left with trying to recreate the problem and getting back to the tech if it recurs. My 5-year warrantly will expire in May so I still have some time.

Thanks to those who offered their valuable suggestions; your time, experience and expertise are appreciated.

You talk about AC input fuse ??

The guitar input cable ?? Yes we must use always a good cable , molded cable are good but you can't repair the phone plug ,

+1!

Trade it in while it's still working -- let it be the store's problem.

Let the amp Power On many hours with no guitar or accessories plug , just the amp . If you ear something wrong ; return the amp to the store it is defective.

Alway do tests that any tech can reproduce .

Also check your guitars output jack for a short or a loose connection.

Here's the dirty little secret......the 600-lb gorilla in the room that no one seems to want to acknowledge.

This amp (and the companion Bandmaster VM) were designed around some very proprietary and specific components -- that is, parts designed and produced solely for FMIC. The production of these parts was limited to the number of amps actually made, plus a few spares intended to support the product through its five-year warranty window. When these parts are gone, THEY'RE GONE FOREVER. Thus, if the product malfunctions and the failure is attributable to one of these proprietary parts, the amp becomes a permanent "hangar queen" unless the defective part can be sourced from the secondary market or cannibalized from an identical amp that's been side-lined to the status of orphan for some unrelated reason.

This is true for virtually every contemporary solid-state platform: the Mustang's, the Cyber-whatever's, the Frontman's, the new Champ series, all of them.

If the amp manages to survive the five-year term of the warranty unscathed, the owner should consider himself extremely fortunate then start shopping for a new model.

I think the DSP module containing a number of specific IC chips will disappear quickly as an available replacement part if it hasn't already.

Here's the schematic......
