Hi

I just bought a used hot rod deville 212. When I tried it out at the home of the seller everything was ok. But when I came home and I plugged it in something was rattling inside it when I played it, like there is something loosen. What could that be?

grtz

Could just be tube rattle.

If you play a note and using a wooden chopstick or pencil touch the tube and it stops, it's tube rattle. Sometimes with power tubes if you switch them and if you're lucky, it might stop. Tube dampers can help too, but if you still have rattle, you'll need to replace the tube. If it's a power tube, you'll need a matched set and have the bias checked.

Room rattles can sound like they are coming from inside the amp.

Make sure the tubes are all seated properly and didn't come loose in transport. Follow 63supro's advice. If that doesn't solve the problem, the the cabinet and room for vibrations. I am constantly fighting room rattles in my studio.

yeah, sometimes I think it are room rattles, but if I i install my brother's amp in my room it not, or less. Maybe its a combination of something loose in my amp and room rattles.

Could be the speaker or baffles screws ?

I receive a Hot Rod Deluxe to fix , power tubes weak . All of these screws are loose.

Always helps to go and tighten up all the screws on the amp, particularly on something you bought used. Make sure all the wires and tubes are tightly seated as well. Clean it out also- dust and anything that is in there.

UNPLUG THE AMP AND LET IT SIT FOR 30 MINUTES BEFORE YOU GO STICKING YOUR HANDS IN THERE. Not kidding on that one.

Just be careful not to over tighten the speaker nuts or you'll warp the basket.

I won't open it 'cause I really don't have any experience with opening amps :p I will bring him to a tech. It has to be somewhere in the left side of the amp (if the back is facing toward you). I think it is the left speaker or the springreverb. I already held a pencil against the tubes while playing and the ratteling stayed, so it are not the tubes who are loose.

Be sure to see a qualified tech if you don't want to loose your money .

I think it is the reverb. Is it normal that it feels very loose? It is covered in a kind of a bag.

The reverb tank is located ( loose ) in a "tolex " bag wich is screw on the bottom of the cab.

I removed the reverb tank and played through it and the ratteling was still there. So it are not the tubes and not the reverb. What else could it be? It seems to come from the left speaker (when the back is facing toward you). The screws from the speaker are tight.
