Anybody else ever wonder why Fender doesn't make the HR series in just a head? I know they do make a few amp heads but no HR. I'd think it'd be easy to do since they're making the combos. Ya know? I could go for a Blues Jr. head to go with a 12" Celestion I have in a cab.

Look at the chassis layout of the Hot Rods. The tubes point down, the transformers point forwards (into the cab), with the knobs pointing up. Putting that style of chassis in a head gives you a head that's shaped like a suitcase.

If you take the speaker out of a Blues Jr, you've effectively turned it into a head. You can't make the cab a whole lot smaller than that because the transformers point one way and the tubes hang down the other. A little smaller but not much, and it would roughly have the same proportions. You might as well leave the speaker in there so you can have a combo when you want, and just unplug the speaker cable and use the combo as a head to drive your other speaker cab.

Rearranging the chassis to make it more head-appropriate legally makes it a new amp even if they don't change any circuitry (the chassis is part of the grounding scheme) so they'd have to run the amps through UL/CSA/EU inspections again.

+1

An excellent point!

And one that begs the question as to what such multi-lateral certification costs......?

On top of that, the market is saturated with tons of low wattage heads that can do way more than a Blues Jr. VHT, Vox, Mesa and Blackstar a great examples.
