Im in the market for a new amp, and I started to fall in love with the Twin's. I am a Les Paul guy but I love the sound of good LP through a nice fender. Im starting to get pretty set on wanting to get the Fender 65 twin reverb but I do have some concerns because of the 85 watts.

Is this amp suitable for playing out? Every gig ive ever played, Ive barely been able to even get to 5 with my 50 Watt Laney Protube. Im curious to know how this amp will hold up live when I will probably only be able to get the thing to about 4 max live, or so id imagine.

I also have a Hot Rod Deluxe iii, and I like it, but I like the Twins much more.

My TRRI is clean to ear-bleeding loud. I don't think you'll find a louder combo amp. I'm running Philips ECG 7581A output tube through a pair of JBL K120 speakers. Thing moves a serious amount of air. Outdoor gigging will be no problem.

If you need to tame the volume, you can try less efficient speakers, like the Jensen MOD series.
I had a pair of Mod 12-70's in my TRRI and they worked fine for that. Not a gigantic change, but more noticeable than switching pre-amp tubes, for example.
You also get to turn up the amp to get the same volume as before. There's more room to play around on the tone controls, too.

I really love the sound of these reissues. Is it worth getting an attenuator with it? That's what I was thinking of doing. I could then get the breakup without killing everyone in my band.

Why not take a look at the Super Reverb re-issue? I think you'll find the 40-watt output better suited for your situation. Trust me, it's plenty loud.

In that case you might sit tight and see if Fender's newly-but-apparently-prematurely-announced Vintage Modified Vibrolux Reverb actually materializes. There's a lot of interest in this amp.

The TRRI aren't a bad amps but for stock Jensen speakers .. prolly the worst sounding speakers ever .. dead meat. And yes, the amp has plenty of power and doesn't break up at all, so get yourself a good OD pedal.

I definitely love the sound of the twins with a TS9 or TS808 in front of it. In my cart online I have an attenuator, Twin Reissue, and a Ts9. Its tempting to hit order lol.

With this amp I think that an attenuator would be a waste. The purpose of an attenuator is to be able to push the output tubes to distortion and have it at lower volumes. You will never push the TRRI into output tube distortion, and the sound is clean at any volume, so just turn the volume down and use the pedal. Any distortion from a straight TRRI would have to come from the speakers being pushed to their limit, and that only happens at full volume and an attenuator won't do this ever.

+1

And any speakers used in this manner as installed in a Twin Reverb better have the mettle to handle such an amount of juice. I've seen literally hundreds of Oxford 12T6's, Jensen C12N's, Altec 417C's, and JBL D120F's fried from such an onslaught.

Ok yeah that makes a lot of sense. How loud is the volume around 4? The other guitarist in my band can get his marshall to about 3 live. Its a 100 watter. I get my 50 watt to about 4 or 5 depending on the sound guy. So im assuming 4 might be a safe volume.

You guys rule, answering all my questions with ease. Love it, greatly appreciated!

Numbers on a volume knob are entirely arbitrary and do not really correlate to the amount of power the amp is generating. However, suffice to say that "4" on a Twin Reverb should be adequate for rehearsals. "6" will rock a medium-sized club and anything above that should be reserved for outdoor venues where an audience's threshold for pain is much more tolerable.
