Is this something one should attempt to fix oneself, or take it in to a tech? Also, is it easy to tell by looking at the cap whether or not it is a bad one?

Thanks for your advice.

Steve,

Bluesky is trying to save you from chasing your tail and future headaches. Learned from the school of hard knocks. Anyone can say "change this resistor or that capacitor" with no real rhyme or reason. After all the "quick" fixes don't work, you are much further from the cure. And where are these so-called amp gurus? Off writing about some other "miracle mod."

You have two main issues going against you. 1.) White noise or hiss or hum maybe due to a number of problems. Finding and eliminating them can be a long drawn-out battle. 2.) new re-issue amp printed boards do not take kindly to the many fixes that maybe needed to find and cure this problem.

IMHO, these are NOT good amps to learn "how-to-fix" tube amps. You need very special care not to permanently damage the board, rendering it an $$$ door stop. I can't tell you how many basket cases I've seen where ppl have tried to fix or hot-rod amps with delicate circuit boards. Resulting in a useless boat anchor, that is unfixable --- as aftermarket printed boards are next to impossible to find. Which means that one is reduced to either buying another amp to savage the board or going DIY P2P. At that point, might as well look for a nice used SF DR.

Just my 2¢ worth.

Thank you, BMW2002Ti: you have proven my point, by being patient and understanding of a newby, and have restored my trust in this forum and most of its members, like you. In three well-written paragraphs, you helped me more than bluesky's irrational insults and arrogant self-importance.

I thank you again, and you are exactly right: the new amps are not the best ones to learn repair and modification. As I say above, I did have extremely good luck in finding what bluesky mockingly referred to as the "perfect amp." I don't know why the new one works so much better, and since I like to play guitar more than fix gear, I really don't care. I'm just happy I was able to find it relatively easily.

Cheers,
Steve

My point made for me. Instead of patiently teaching an obvious novice (see my original post),in the spirit of education and sharing of knowledge, you chose to insult with inane comments and insults. Your modus operandi, apparently. (By the way, I did have luck in returning the amp: it is now hiss-free all the way to 10 on both channels.)

The only "inane" comments in this thread are yours:

Actually, if it is just a matter of replacing the carbon comp resistors for each of the preamp plates with metal foil ones (2 for each plate, I think?), I will do this myself. For my guitar parts, I usually order from Stewmac, so do you have any recommendations as to which metal resistors I should buy to replace the crappy carbon ones in the DRRI? And, I am assuming they should be 100k as the current ones are?

Thanks,
Steve

We are all very happy you found the amp of your dreams. Buh bye.

Thus once again, instead of patiently correcting the admittedly erroneous comments of an obvious novice, but one who was at least trying to solve a problem and learn something along the way, you call my comments "inane," and choose to insult and belittle, while other forum members were patient and friendly in their responses.

Thank you, sir, for once again proving my point for me. You are, if nothing else, excellent at doing that. Well, that, and also being disingenuous, for I seriously doubt you are indeed "happy" I found any amp, let alone the one of my "dreams" (your term, not mine: I don't dream about amps).

Nor do I believe you speak for the "we" that you mention. I have received nothing but courtesy and respect from all of the other members of this forum, so I do wonder who is this "we" for whom you claim to speak?

I must admit I am forever in your debt, for showing me - in your posts - several perfect examples of how not to respond on forums to people only looking for a little help, and perhaps some interesting conversation and a warm welcome.

I do not suppose we shall have further dealings, sir, so I will take this opportunity to once again congratulate you for your doubtless hard-won extensive knowledge. I commend you also for your impressively insufferable self-importance, also no doubt hard-won and cultivated assiduously, in order that you may "correct" us novices and newbies on this forum with your disparaging and tactless contumely (disguised as insulting "questions"), showing - intentionally, one must assume - your intolerance for anyone who knows less than do you.

However, I remain ever your faithful admirer, in the hope you might one day respond to a noob in the gentle and helpful fashion evinced by forum members such as BMW2002Ti, a true teacher and patient gentleman.
