Hello,

I just bought a secondhand EVH 5150 III 100w amp head  . It’s a wonderful amp but I have a small problem with the footswitch: it’s a 4-button footswitch, 1 for each of the three channels plus one to switch the effects loop on/off.

It works well excepted for the effects switch: it stays on all the time and its led is lit. If I stomp on the switch, nothing happens, the loop stays on and the led stays lit.

Could someone please help me fix this?? Thanks!

Hi nicobenny,

Is the effects button on the amp switched on? Does it maybe override the footswitch?

There is no switch on the amp itself. The effects loop is on by default when the footswitch is not plugged in.
The only way of turning it on/off is via the footswitch, which is where my problem lies.

It is almost always the cable, they are notorious for having bad connections in the plug.

I've already changed the cable. With the old one, I couldn't switch correctly from channel to channel. Buying a brand new 7 pin din cable helped me solve this, I can now switch channels perfectly but the effects loop switching problem is still present so I think the (new) cable is probably not to blame...

Hmmmm.

You have a switch and a cable. You changed cables and now things sorta work. What's left that could be faulty?

Maybe it's time to open up the switch and see what's inside.

I have already openend it. Well, physically, nothing seems to be burnt or broken or so. Do you think it might be the "effects" switch itself that's internally broken??

Anyway, thank you all for helping ;-)

Just to let you know I've had my problem fixed. I took my amp and footswitch to a technician. He managed to identify and fix the problem: it happenned to be a dead transistor in the footswitch.

I can now switch without any problem! :P

The guy also changed my power tubes, which were almost dead. My amp is now sounding like never before. :D

In any case, if you're looking for a good amp technician in Belgium, I know a very good specialist!!

Hey welcome back Bluesky :D :D :D

Did you happen to notice that was posted in February 2014? Bluesky's temper tantrum and subsequent departure occurred in May 2014.
