Power tube ratings will make a difference. For example, Groove Tubes come in blue (early breakup), white (middle), and red for late. You might check that out.

Good point GTG. The most common ratings for tubes that come in new Fender amps seem to be in the white 4 to 7 range. I have seen a few that come with the blue 1 to 3, and those breakup earlier by comparison. I usually like the Red 8-10 for latest onset of breakup. If not GT, many vendors can supply higher current ratings on most brands for later onset of breakup.

Wow, bluesky, your BDRI thread is awesome!

Well, you completely lost me with the electric stuff but it was an interesting read!
Thank you so much for all the effort you went through with creating that thread.

just wondering if maybe my problem is related to tube rolling, in particular running an unbalanced 12AT7 in PI position V3?

Thanks.

Oh, make sure your amp is biased properly regardless of what power tubes you have in it:

I didnt read the whole thread but I owned one for a year, I changed the speaker to a Eminence GB 128 50 watt, works great on the drive channel and more head room. I use only humbucker guitars on clean with the volume at 3 to 4 loud! with little break up! Also put a better speaker cable for a bit more cleaner sound.

The stock emmi speaker can not handle the power of the amp and is not very responsive to the amps EQ adjustments. Changing the line up of the pre-amp tubes alone, will not yield a very pleasant amp in my experience.

Get a quality speaker that is rated around a 100watts and go with a 12ay7 pre-amp tube in the V1 slot and a 12at7 in the phase inverter slot. You will have a very nice sounding Fender amp with these few changes in place..in fact..a Fantastic sounding amp in my opinion. Taste in speakers is subjective to each player, but a quality 100watt speaker will allow the amp to EQ in much more detail than it can do in stock form..hence, better tones !
