Hey Anyone,
I have a Fender Super RR 244, w/6L6-5881 tube.
One position red plates the tube.
What is causing this. Also, it's a fixed bias.
Please help if you can.

What is a "Fender Super RR 244"?

Did you just change power tubes?

Have you ever had the bias checked on the amp?

Just because an amp is fixed bias, doesn't mean the bias shouldn't be checked and adjusted if necessary when replacing power tubes. Some fixed bias amps have an adjustment pot, others require changing components. Knowing what your amp really is will help us determine what the configuration is.

Hey Folks,
After removing and testing the resistors, they are all good. One of
the 5881's shorted internally and went into red plating.
Finally I took the 2 6L6's from my 68' Bandmaster and installed them
in the Super, which is a 90's something Fender amp, and all is great!
These are the original Raytheon 6L6's and many times better
than anything New Sensor sells. Most of their tubes are not lasting
and very cheaply made. JJ's and Winged C is what I am recommending to this
customer of mine. I was just asking in curiosity about red plating.
I personally wouldn't have any amp made since the late 70's. There are
a few exceptions. Very few.
I have been in volved in music and amps since the 60's and quite let down with all the amp companies. they are only greedy with LL THEY
I use my 67" Bassman, 72'Ampeg SVT and I recently acquired a Peavey TNT>
I play bass and the TNT is okay.
Anyway Thanks for you guys. replies.
Talk to you folks in the future.
Best to all!
Tube Dude.

The two modern made 6L6GC types that seem ok, for the long haul, are the Tungsol STR-6L6GC and the EH 6L6GC. Tine is another thing.

I'd buy the tubes from someone that is going to ferret-out bad ones. And test the tubes under amp-like conditions. Not under typical tube tester conditions.

Well, we still have no idea what a "Fender Super RR 244" is.

What resistors did you remove and test?

Did you rebias the power tubes for the replacement tubes? If so, how?

How do you know the tube shorted internally?

Which is why I buy my JJs from Eurotubes.

"...Amplitrex AT1000... We simply call these machines the last word in tube testing. It is the most well thought out and precise tester we have ever used. In short, a thoroughly amazing piece of gear!..."

My thoughts exactly! I will get one....eventually. More and more vendors are using the Amplitrex so that their numbers can all match up and you can get the same grade of tube from different vendors.

Now, about this "grade" thing that Bob mentions a few times?

"...In the past we had found the VTV Characterizer very helpful in allowing us thru experimentation to find certain grades and characteristics that worked very well with different amps....

"...and we can actually find the perfect grade of tube for a fixed bias amp if these parameters are known..."

"...All power tubes have a 24 hour burn and we grade all of our power tubes right down to the milliamp so that we can supply future orders to customers that will exactly match the originals...."

That's fine. I still prefer to set my own bias (regardless of the grade) to get the sound that I want. :D

To that exclusive list I would add Svetlana's now-OOP Winged C's.

Arjay, those are the best of the Russian made variety. Sad that are not made to the standards they were in the 1990's.
