I am ready to ditch my open back amp and go to a head and cab. (Classic rock and modern worship) Using a tele mostly and it just sounds a bit to mid-rangy. Curious what would would be the better choice sound wise. I am mic'ing the amp, so projection doesn't necessarily matter.

I would have much better choices by going 12" as there are so many great options. If I go 10" it would be 2 x 10. It limits the choices, but there are still good ones. The size matters other wise I would just go 2 x 12.

I am on the fence and wanted to hear from other guitar guys. I am looking at a Hot Rod Deluxe ext speaker. Wasn't sure if I would like the Celestion that is in but, thought I might give that a try. Lots of really good speaker makers out there as well.

I like the beatles/tom petty, just on the edge tone and think either set up could nail that. I didn't mention head yet because I am researching my options there as well.

Thank you

Shawn

Why not give the 1 x 15 option some consideration?

I would consider 1 x 15. Even less options for cabinets and speakers however. I specified a Delta Blues for a church install and I have played through that. It has a Weber Blue dog 15 in it. Not bad. Good suggestion. Thank you.

Why not both? Beauty of external cabs is that you can mix and match.

I'd look at a lot of other cabinets from older vintage Fender to newer ones by Newell, Avatar, BeaverBottoms before I bought a Hot Rod Extension cab. Those are pricey for what you get. I've bought my '65 Tremolux cab (unloaded) for $100, and my Bandmaster cab for $150 with 2 celestions I sold off. Even having a cab built new correctly out of finger-jointed pine will be same as a new HR Extension cab, and you'd know it was done the right way and will positively contribute to the sound.

Some have options of making your cab a convertible - a middle removable section. Doesn't add a lot of cost, but makes that cabinet that much more versatile.

I'd start with a 2x10 for a tele (loving my Tremolux with Weber 10A125s) and then get a 1x15.
