Two days before my 60th BD this June, i jumped in and yanked my VK head to do bias and look over a few things....being old and new school i have been in serious HIGH voltage stuff along my career path or hobbies. Like 22,000Vdc at 400 amps (instant human ash) if ya boo booed there.

SO being the master of electronics know it all old toad that has been shocked electrocuted and thrown into walls by SVT power supplies airplane ECM amps etc -i did it again...but this time it had a bit of meaning :|

Here i am at the beach nice stable set up, all my probes in place i am in my lab and my TV is in my office so i took the VK my fluke and my dummy loads and put them on my office chair input side up.....so I can watch TV while I play with HV…..real smart Rollo

SO, then i began looking around (after i sloppy tossed a resistor in for a quick check...left the lead long by a hair width from HV on Pin 3 (plate) i am running 6l6 and KT66 in it.

so all was well then i started smelling a smell embedded in my brain...a hot carbon resistor (I used a 470 ohm -carbon until my replacements came from somelier experiments).

SO FORGETTING rule one (one hand in pocket) or 2)....go to Porsche track car, remove IR/temp detector use it to view amp....BUT NOOOOOO

So one hand on the chassis to stabilize it......and the other to "feel" resistors and ‘dere heat

I felt heat and 492 VDC - straight across my chest, pin to chassis via me ole 32Pf/200K plus rollo (I measure myself from time to time) and it didn't drop me but i stood there for a good two minutes thinking (i used to design medical physiological amplifiers and crap and KNOW hearts)

OH great the wife comes home I’m dead spayed on the floor and 4 schnauzers are snacking on my remains.

i didn't touch an amps again for 3 months inside...at 60 or at 14..A INCREDIBLY STUPID THING TO DO - Sign me freaking idiot and those words are not strong enough.

use chop sticks, thermal imagining AND when measuring anything in that amp of yours..

SAFTEY, no beer, weed....or coffee. fix it then party

Probably alive cuz i was too damn smoked up to die.....at the current time i really do not need to die....you either

-Idiot Grandpa (to no damn kids –kid snot all over my stuff….heck no)

Side note; I suffered brain damage after an operation, my left hemisphere was starved over time know one knows how long…..one of the things the left hemi does is reasoning and a big part of intellectual crap goes on there – the right side is the party side (fully evident for 30 years)

So now, I approach a lot of things including amps with a different eye and mind than I had- I have to remember to be aware of that.

And for al the old folk out there –get your neck arteries listened to by the doc next appointment 45 or over… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carotid_endarterectomy

BTW, I used to do incredible tile setting for my houses…the last two since my “event “occurred one of them sucked bad- the other (here) is much nicer but not at par with what I used to do…
So I am aware…you too –OK?

Having a bionic cardiac implant, 492 volts would've started me on my dirt nap quicker than I can type this.

Stay safe, Rollo!

I perform high voltage testing on generator in power plants and I know not to mess with electricity. My amps go to someone who knows what they are doing. This is a great reminder for anyone thinking of opening up there amp. Stay safe and alive

Big mistake and sorry for you ;

"....So one hand on the chassis to stabilize it......and the other to "feel" resistors and ‘dere heat......."

I learn in my electronic school , when working / trouble shouting , I must work with only one hand .

Sorry Rollo. Everyone's been there. Last year I had the back panel off one of my amps, looked and it was still plugged in. I hadn't even been drinking.

Yeah, like the guy said i learned in electronics school..i taught it on top of living it for decades...wasn't drinking beer (but have drank beer and made stupid mistakes BUT the latest was due to weed...and brain damage i put nice spauge film i had from my military design .047 rolled film put it in completely backwards....in my tele WTH...done it a million times)

HV is weird crap, can fry you doing the idiot thing i did, or not as you see...i tend to like to be a bit in control of crap that wants to kill me.

I have a pic sent to me saved that shows three adult males that climbed a 250Kv tower and fried into blackend heaps at the bottom of the tower....oopski

my boss at the LASER place and good bud from SR-71 days at Beale...the highly trained technical idiot -took a weller soldering GUN....and thinking he could get away with it tried to attach a wire ...that was on the 400amp 22KV supply i mentioned(light off volts for the laser but dropped amps once the rod fired off - in my post...he was blown about 10feet into a concrete wall and was stone cold white as a ghost for 2 days and a very lucky man as he was a single parent with a diaper clad little guy at home....

HV is no laughing matter...but a nice non chest invasive shock does teach pretty good...

Last one then outta here wife’s on a VPN taking my bandwidth i dare not QOS her butt on the router

but - it ONLY takes about 10 micro amps to kill you if introduced during the T wave of your heart cycle (the retiming function)....i had to be really careful when doing front ends (patient side) designs and extremely careful on neo-nates invasively being monitored.

teaching in a prison while i was at MSFT so an inmate had a TV that was on the fritz...thinking it would be a grand thing to show the students...guts of a tv (not a modern LCD/LED type old style...so onto a maple bench it goes i fire up all the test gear and begin to start tracing signals flow made a small error....

left the o'scope grounded...oopski me, the TV lifted off for nice ride into the bench behind me and that one set me on my arse....TV with a freaking floating chassis...

put a nice burned hole into the hardwood....i told the dude - ya need a new TV

had a ton of mex nationals and Americans - i like growing peppers-so one guy was making tons of noise about his pepper abilities.. So evil like i grew habaneras and took a few in (against the law) so they could have a snack.....floored any and all that tried. this one lily white dude (turned out to end up teaching the same stuff in college after he got out)...he couldn't eat for two days and no milk to fix it..

HV or habernaros....CAUTION, no beer...weed...or for that matter too much darn coffee –limit distractions, hand in the pocket when you can, chopsticks to poke with and a damn IR gun to look at the amp’s heat signature…..

But Darwinian theory has been pressed to it’s limit with me and voltage -and i really don't want to press it anymore....

Wife has been told to vacate when I get back around 3 today
I am taking my bone stock DRRI, audionting the speakers I have for it - c-gold, the two V30's and the stock un-buzzed Jensen CK12

Bone stock with a 2012 namm tele that twangs the best I’ve had…is ice picky but DAMN in the vibro king bottom yesterday..for 2 minutes I heard an old DR…singing the blues with a NICE break up on some tube change but stock output and GZ34

I studied the rietzel (my moms side were rietzels) DRRI mods, looked at the Frizt ‘da cat mods

For the 47pf everyone is bitching about- I decided I will adopt the same vibe as the supersonic 22 treats the PF with a 10m…no pops when switching (off the foot pedal) for the ss22…so I’m doing a pull pot and will copy the ss22 method.

in it when I am done messing with the innards)…for the normal channel I am going to make it a jazz voicing and start where this guy did http://www.qrp.pops.net/jazzamp.asp
I will add to my link I started as I go because I have a nice lab killer camera and stuff and document things….

There are a few LA tricks I have not seen mentioned
But on the ss22 I am changing the PI coupling cap to .022 – possibly 01uf like SF DR –time will tell

i have doe a ton to the ss22 and when my but finishes with the replacement loop board i whipped up...i can buton it all up and do the same thing with the speakers

but i do belive i'll get a canibs rex -later the glares from the wife indicate time for me to split......
