Hi,

I own a 2nd hand hotrod deluxe amp recently and i am happy with it,
but I found an annoying noise problem after playing it for a while.

situation:
After the amp has played for 15mins somehow, the amp starts
to produce weird noise whenever I hit the low e string.
please noted that the problem only occurs when the amp has
been playing for 1x minutes. meanwhile noise only occurs whenever
I hit low e string, from e to a on the low e string, other strings are OK.

The amp is around 8~10 years old, I guess it is a kind of tube problem right? Any one has similar situation with me? As the noise only occurs after the tube warm up, I love this amp so much, please help

Likely, you have a thermal or vibrational problem (or both).

Start troubleshooting by examining the chassis for cold or fractured solder joints.

Not vibrational. Definitely thermal. In addition to checking for bad solder joints as Arjay suggests, check to make sure all the tubes are securely seated. A retensioning of the tube sockets may be called for.

The most likely suspects are the tubes, quite possibly a preamp tube. Try substituting a known good 12AX7 in each of the three preamp/PI spots one at a time, starting with V1, the tube on the right when looking at the back of the amp. It could also be an output tube, or solder joints as suggested.

As i only use clean channel only, may i know if it will bybass the V2(for drive channel)? When i play clean tone?
So all i have to check is V1 and V3?

All three tubes are used for all channels. Only half of V2 is used at all times, and the other half of V2 is added when switching to drive channels.

If I decided to change tube do I have to change
All 5 tubes or just the one with problem( if the problem is caused by bad tube)

Change only the one that is bad unless it is a power tube in which case both must be changed and the power tubes rebiased.

Here are the updates,
When the noise come after the amp warm up.
I switched to drive channel, drive channel works, more drive channel work, reverb works,
I have noticed one more thing, last time i said the noise occurs only in low frequency note. this time, i turn the volume up to 3 and hit the string, it seems the noise occurs in other frequency as well.
it seems the noise occurs when the signal power is strong.
any comment?

I bought a Hot Rod Deluxe III --Red October --limited edition (real pretty red), brand spankin' new. I don't play for a living, so the amp was intended to be used primarily in the studio. After no more than 50 hours of use (owned for a year and a half), amp started making the same sound (farting, almost like blown speaker). Wishing now I hadn't, I took the amp to the store where I bought it. I was called when the repairs were finished, and hit in the face with a $129.00 bill, for re-tube, and some "minor soldering". The very same evening I'd paid the bill and picked up the amp, I went to play a benefit show. No more farting sound, but in the middle of the show the amp just went completely silent! I came home, and the next day the amp was working...however...I rehearsed with a new group last week and once again--here we go with the farting. At this point, I'm stuck with a piece of junk. I'm too honest to sell it to someone, knowing it's trash, and even if I were to sell it I'm going to lose money. I own a "67 Princeton, and a ''77 Super Twin Reverb, both of these amps were used regularly with no problems. Each of the vintage amps still have the original tubes and neither has ever been in the shop. I've read about other's having the same exact problems, so I know I'm not the only one who's been disappointed :!:

You know all-too-well what you must do......

Hook-shot that POFS into the nearest convenient dumpster and find a vintage Fender replacement of similar power and speaker configuration.

It's an all-new world now.

And I cannot bring myself to say it's a better one.
