Hey!!
So I have these two old Fender "Special Design Speakers" which if my research is correct are 1990 Eminence brand speakers (12 inch 8 ohm).
Umm I guess adding the Fender sticker to them makes them a Fender design, lol.

I ALSO have two Celestion G12P-80 speakers that are only a few years old.

It has been suggested to me that the OLDER speakers are better, as in, if I were to utilize one of these sets In a 2x12 combo amp, I should use the older ones.
I am not convinced, but I don't know a lot about it.

Is older better? Why? My old pair are 24 years old, gotta wear out sometime don't they?
Why wouldn't speaker quality improve in the last 25 years then?

Thanks, I welcome all comments

Although I am not a big fan of Celestion speakers and their sound, they are very good speakers. I use mainly Eminence but, only their 'for market sale' named speakers. In a choice between OEM Eminence and a Celestion G12P-80, I would opt for the Celestion. It is a better speaker.

I would suggest you try both out in your 212 and let your ears be the judge. "Better" can be very subjective.

Point well made. My use of the word 'better' stems from the concept of 'grades'. OEM vs a named product.

Lol, if we based everything on what our ears told us, what would we talk about on these forums?
I am of course leaning towards the celestions, but it is possible I may test run both types. Quality between the two types is especially what I want to hear about. For all I knew the eminence speakers were some sort of sought after set, lol.

Much of a speaker's sonic character (any speaker) is determined by the type and brand of amp, the type of music played, what outboard devices (if any) are being used, the configuration of the speaker enclosure, what guitar, what pickups, and a myriad of other factors. If you have two different pairs of speakers, try them both and see which set pleases you. You might even give the "mix-and-match" scenario a go and see if one of each best serves your needs.

Many (yours truly among them) believe that the quality and workmanship was better before, when production runs were smaller, profit margins wider, and companies did not have to compete with low cost country production. As production volume goes up, pennies are pinched.

One thing often overlooked is that speaker winding is important, just like pickup winding. Perhaps more so with 16 Ohm speakers, which have more and thinner winding than 8 Ohm ones. And I tend to believe that more care was put into winding and wiring earlier than today. Others may disagree.

But anyhow, I like Celestions. The seventy-80s you have seem to have mixed reviews, though.

Try both since you have them. Ones own taste is purely subjective. I very much favor the 70-80 over the Emi.
