Anybody who has one or played through one have any thoughts or input? I'm seriously considering buying one but am curious about sound quality at lower volumes. There isnt a store nearby enough (without a considerable drive) to demo one firsthand.
Do they retain a good quality sound at lower volumes or is it a type of amp that requires cranking up to appreciate it's tonal deliciousness....which I'm sure it has at higher volume.

I haven't played the amp you're talking about, but a few months ago I was at the store to try out a guitar and the salesman plugged me into the '65 reissue Twin Reverb. I had this preconceived notion that it was going to sound lousy at low volume based on a bunch of opinions I had read on the internet.

Long story short, it sounded delightful to me. Strat + Twin Reverb is a classic for a reason.

I think some of the mods they made to the 68 custom were to give it better low volume characteristics, like a little earlier breakup and more touch sensitivity, so it should be definitely worth trying.

Thanks, I'm thinking the same about lower volume breakup/senstivity...which can be very useful to me.

The two contemporary Twin Reverbs are equipped with different speakers: the '65 blackface has the re-issue Jensen C12K's while the silverface uses Celestion G12V-70's. The latter may be a better fit for the modified platform's intended mission. For either amp, allow adequate time for speaker break-in.

Not many reviews on this amp yet, God knows why.

As for cranking it up, twins are in a league of its own. They don't break up, staying clean all the way up ..

Sounds like a good choice for a bit more rockier type sound as opposed to ultra clean classic 65 tones..not that it couldn't be used for it. I did a search (as well as hitting Fender's site) for all the info I could get and the amp sounds like a good choice for me. I have to admit that I do love the Jensons in a Twin..they have a flavor all their own.
I do believe a trip to GC is in my near future. Thanks for your input.

Twins have always been a favorite for me and the 68 custom with it's modded circuit should make a good all around amp for what I play which consist mostly of modern country, country rock, classic rock, and country. I'm hoping it doesn't break up too early when leaning on the volume. It should take a pedal very well.

I don't own the new VM silverface Twin Reverb but I have an original TR from '78 and a blackface '65 re-issue. Both do pedals very well (as well as delivering prodigious amounts of legendary Fender "clean"). For the types of music you play I think you'll be quite happy with the '68 VMTR.
