I was playing my fender champion 100 quietly in my room to not wake anyone. I went on the computer and left the amp on for a few minutes, and I turn around and it blows! it was really loud, and saw sparks flying out the back, but it only lasted a split second since the power went out. I took the amp and plugged it in somewhere else. Turned it on, 2 seconds later and same thing! It was about a second of loudness and sparks, and it smelled terrible. The amp stayed on, and I played my guitar through it and it worked?! I took it apart and everything seemed fine, however on the back of the amplifier board, I saw a tiny burn mark maybe a square centimeter, on this small silver rectangle part of the board. The part above it was still held on the board. I played the amp for about an hour after and everything about it works fine. Any ideas what could be wrong or nothing at all? Should I get it fixed or would that be a waste of money and its fine anyway?

Ummm, let's see.

Your amp blows up after playing with sparks and noise, the power goes off, yet you plug it back in and it blows up again. It comes back on and you continue to play it and now you want to know what you should do. That about right?

The Champion 100 is a new amp. If you bought it new, take it back under warranty and stop screwing around!

I wish, I forgot to mention I bought it used under "great condition" from musician's friend for a good price and it's past the return, and i'd have to pay to ship it, it'd take forever, ect.. Should have bought it new it's not that expensive anyway.. lesson learned

So far i'll keep playing it and hopefully nothing will happen. If it works it works, that's what my guitar buddies have been telling me. I'm good with soldering so I might try to make a better connection to the board, clean it carefully with some alcohol.

I called the local repair guy and he even said it's fine, so i'm wondering what other people would say since I looked online a lot and I haven't found anything like blown amps still working fine.

That has to be some of the most moronic advice I've ever heard of, and it sounds like you and the "local repair guy" are two of a kind. Two sorry examples of absolute stupidity.

At this point, our participation in this kabuki dance is limited to merely standing on the sidelines and cheering with glee in anticipation of the inevitable outcome......

I'd definitely get that repaired.. But yeah, your choice how to treat your amp.
I was afraid to turn mine back on the other day when the power went off, despite me not playing it at that specific moment and the amp being on standby and there definitely were no sparks flying around.. I do treat it with extra care

Well, maybe invest in a good ABC fire extinguisher. :D

I have this funny feeling that the tech said what he said --- because he does NOT want to see the amp. Maybe. No?

I'd email or call Musician's Friend and ask them if they can do something for you. Like if you mail it back and pay the price difference can they exchange it for a new one. If that doesn't work email Fender.

I'd be afraid to have that thing in my house. You might forget and leave it on one day and end up with a real fire.

Sorry to say I'm beginning to think MF is negligent, possibly shady, in reselling broken malfunctioning items that other people have returned. It's happened to me so many times that I am becoming afraid to order anything from them. Call and be assertive and see if they do the right thing.

Every bit of advice posted above is good. Either get Musician's Friend to offer an exchange or get the fire extinguisher.

Personally, I would never plug it in again.

Sounds like your Guitar repair guy is a special kind of stupid. I would contact MF and send it back ASAP ! I'm sure they'll refund you what ever it costs to send it to them. They're a class act and won't screw you over.

I can't believe what I'm reading! The amp is a potential fire hazard and you still continue to use it? Then some fool of a so called, "tech" tells you it's OK to use it as is? And on top of it all, your friends endorse this "tech's" advice"? Lastly, you aim to 'tinker' with it? Man, get your head together!! Stop using it and either return it or have it professionally evaluated but NOT by the aforementioned imbecile "tech".

This is merely IMO where I urgently hope your mileage does not vary.

+1 all the way! That amp is a fire just waiting to happen. Also,...I'd be finding me a new amp tech,...the one this guy chose is a Putz wrapped up in a Moron! I would ALSO stop dealing with MF,and would also advise him to stay away from GC as well,...they pull the same crap from what I have heard when it comes to selling gear others have returned. One other thing,...I would not be fooling around inside that amp, either.
