" 5V4 look like a 5Y3 for spec , just more drop of voltage. "

Correct. the 5V4 and 5V4GA are indirect-heated, slow startup rectifiers which can sub for the direct-heated 5Y3GT, in most units.

The best indirect heated 5Y3GT subs are the mil spec 6106 (5Y3WGT). Or the mil spec 6087 (6087W). Very tough tubes, consistent, long-lasting rectifiers. Still at pretty good prices.

You will also get a greater current draw on the heater filament which may or may not cause a problem with the power transformer.

I don't understand.

5V4 need 2 amps for heater less than 5U4 wich need 3 amps. And 5AR4 need 1.9 amps . A power transformer which feed 5AR4 can feed 0.1 amp more for 5V4

5V4 look like a 5Y3 for spec , just more drop of voltage .

The recommendation was to use a 5U4GB which draws 3 amps from the heater supply. I still disagree with that recommendation in non-Fender amps unless one knows the specs of the power transformer being used. 5V4s were NOT recommended as a substitute for a 5AR4.

For vintage Fender amps (BF and SF):

5V4GA for the 5Y3GT. Ok.

5U4GB for 5AR4/GZ34. Ok.

For other 5AR4/GZ34 rectified amps or more recent Fender amps, you need to check the specs of the power transformer. Specifically, can it handle a steady 3-amp load on the 5VAC tap.

I would not -- under any circumstances -- hazard an original blackface power tranny regardless of how stoutly I know them to be built.

It is easy to to have some voltage reading to be sure transformer is enough powerfull.
