Ironically, I actually met Admiral Turner in the elevator at the Old EOB in late October of 1980. I was there to pick up a package from his secretary. After telling me it was ready to go, I whimsically remarked that I'd be back to help him clean out his safe after the upcoming election......

If a glance could kill, I would've been a vaporized pile of ashes on the floor.

I met ExDIR John McLaughlin at Family Day in 2004 (he was actually acting Director at that time). He and his wife were greeting people as we shuffled through the executive suite. My wife was with me, just in awe at the entire experience. When he shook my hand, he noticed my green contractor badge (blue for staff) and asked me what office I was supporting. I didn't know if I could tell him and just froze. After a few seconds I mumbled the office's initials. He just smiled and nodded, saying "Oh, yes. I am familiar with their work." NEXT!

It's easy to become flustered in those situations.

You probably handled it better than you thought.

Meeting General Hayden was even better.

A friend of mine (a staffer) organized a car show for the annual Family Day several years ago. I had my red 1964 Ford Galaxie convertible (sold it several years ago :( ) there. I wandered off to get lunch and when I came back (carrying a large soda, two hot dogs, and large fries) I found a large crowd gathered around my car. I rushed up and suddenly discovered it was General Hayden and his wife with their security detail and a cameraman! I dumped my lunch on the convertible top boot cover ("It's OK. Its my car.") and asked the General if he had any questions. I invited him and his wife to sit in the car and we chatted for a good 15 minutes. My friends were all standing around watching. They finally had to go, shook my hand, and thanked me for showing them my car. After they left, I realized I should have offered to let him take the car for a spin around the parking lot.
