I was thinking of changing my speaker in my blues junior 3 to an Eminence Screamin Eagle. I had previously put in a Texas Heat, but the glassy fender chime is gone (but the Texas Heat nice is a great warm and chunky speaker). What do you think of the Screamin Eagle? Anyone have any joy? Especially in regards to retaining sparkle and adding bass compared to the stock speaker.

Any help would be very appreciated.
Thanks!

I have found that most stock speakers are for low volume playing and/or undiscerning ears. I say most stock speakers because, my FSR HRDIII came with a C Rex speaker already loaded. This is the speaker I would have put into this amp if it came with any other speaker including the Celestion that comes with the HRDIII's now.

All of Eminence's speakers, with the exception of their OEM's, are very good speakers with subtle to not at all subtle tonal differences. The Sceamin Eagle is not my idea of preferred speaker voicing but, it is a very good speaker for those who are looking for what it delivers.

I like hemp speakers. Coupled with an alnico is especially pleasing, IMO. The articulation and very clean bass of hemp cones is music to my ears. The highs are very present without ice-picky highs. Hemp is so articulate it may even be a bad thing as there is no place to hide little boo-boos. Strings that may have droned in the background suddenly have very clear definition. I love it but, it is making me fine tune my playing. I think this is a good thing.

Hemp takes longer to break in but, the result is well worth it. The stiff quality goes away and sublime tone emerges.

Make sure you give the Texas Heat a chance to break in. My RWB took a while.

I haven't heard the Screaming Eagle but I bet it would be good. Eminence has yet to let me down. I'm a big fan of the Lil' Buddy but it's in 10".

Thanks for both the replies! Your input is really helpful!!
I have also been considering the Cannabis Rex, and what you have said makes me want to buy it! but I also read here on the forum that the highs are rolled off, and I am worried that glassy tone I want back will still not be present. As I think I may put the Texas heat/Cannabis rex in a closed back cab, I want to turn the Blues junior into a more sparkly amp, hence the Screamin Eagle.

As for the RW&B, was this in a Blues Junior 3? If so, how different than the stock speaker was it? Anthony also mentioned that people upgrade Fenders with it because the "dark tone mellows out the highs and provides a warmer, smoother tone". What do you think of it compared to the stock speaker?

To shed some more light, I emailed Anthony at Eminence who said the "Screamin Eagle and Texas Heat have a very similar tonal signature. This is because they use the same cone. The biggest difference between them is that Texas Heat is a 2" voice coil speaker and Screamin Eagle is a 1.75" voice coil speaker."

Many thanks again for helping me on this tone quest!

Anthony is great. The last time I emailed him it was because I was looking for a speaker for a Fender Princeton 112 Plus (solid state, 65 watts) I got off Ebay. I had wanted to put a Cannabis Rex in but then realized it is only 50 watts and he recommended against it, but offered the RWB as a similar idea.

The stock speaker was actually pretty good, but had sort of a full range sound with extended highs. If you weren't careful with eq it could sound too cutting and fatiguing to listen to. The amp also had a hiss that was very audible. The RWB has an earlier drop off in the highs. It smooths them out. Also the hiss is mostly gone. It has very large powerful lows to the point where it will go right through the walls in your house. The lower mids have a bit of a bark to them. Good for a balls-out rock sound, but most of the time when I want to relax and just noodle around I use the Champion 110 with the Lil Buddy, to be honest.

If you can stand my playing, I have a clip of the Red, White, and Blues here:

With the Blues JR it's a fight to get enough low end, so I would go with the cannabis Rex.
I found the magic sparkle on this amp can be found by turning the master all the way up and only use the volume. It's a little hard to control that way, but it's worth it.
I also used a lower gain v1.

Thanks again for your help. I have now gone completely the other way and have ordered a Jensen C12n to get the sparkle I need. I'm going to keep put my Texas Heat in a cab, and will now buy a Cannabis Rex or RW&B later-on for a different tonal flavour. I know it sounds odd to have so many speakers, but I am recording an album so I want to have variety when it comes to rhythm/lead together. Now that I know what can be achieved in regards to speaker tone I feel confident to experiment.

Wayne, some nice tone you've got there with the RW&B, I especially love that guitar part, every time I hear it, it makes me think of driving at night in the fog! Very atmospheric!

Eddie, your tip is ingenious! You are right, it's very difficult to control but it also helps with the lows a bit. Putting in the lower gain tube in V1, did it alter the volume i.e. made the amp quieter and more responsive on the vol/master, or, just delayed tube distortion and made no effect to output volume?

Thanks again for your time with this.

By the way, for Blues Junior owners who are thinking of getting a Texas Heat and have stumbled on this post, the Texas Heat in a BJ has treble, but it's more of a low-mid treble. A Gibson SG sounds great with it. Creamy with some bite. Very (late) Radiohead, jazzy sort of tone. Also, Strat's with Texas Specials or vintage pickups sound great with the Texas Heat – although there is a little sparkle lost. But if you are using pedals, the texas heat is perfect for getting a good thick warm tone!

Thanks! Yes let us know how the Jensen turns out. I have a MOD 10-70 that I like. It delivers the chime.

Not to me. Only space and money prevent me from having a collection of custom speaker cabs with different delicious kinds of speakers in them.

Like the cab changing app in Fuse that lets you try different cabs with the same head.
The tonal variations were an eye opener for me. Now, real tubes powering real speakers is what I like to play with.
