My 6V6 stash is kind of depleted right now, but I do have four Silvertone 6V6 GTA's. I'm also thinking the coupling caps in this are probably made from recycled beer cans and water bottles. I know there's arguments about a "cap is a cap", but maybe changing some values around would help too. I do have some vintage caps I could try.

Those that don't have a clue might tell you that a cap is a cap is a cap, but the rest of us will tell you that you can certainly get different tone responses with different cap types.

Try the bias advice given by BMW2002Ti, and maybe try the lower gain tubes in the PI, but definitely investigate the type of coupling and tone caps that you have. You might well have to do something more drastic to the tone stack, like actually adding one. According to the manual, this tone circuit is designed around adjusting the 4K frequencies.

If you have the schematic in PDF format, could you send a copy to me? I'll PM you with my email address.

Silvertone 6V6GTA are fine tubes. Most are Sylvania made (with "312" manufacturer code). Like photo. Bias them to 8-8.5 watts per tube.

Sorry it took so long to respond - supper got in the way. I do have a schematic I could send and it's PDF.

As far as the Silvertone's go, they are marked 312 ABC

Thanks

I serviced a client's Silvertone 1482 about five or six years back and it had the original Silvertone (nee Sylvania) bottles from around 1963. They still tested as "good" on my TV-7A and they sounded great. Aside from a new cap can, installing a grounded power cable, and having the speaker re-coned (mice had eaten away the surround), the amp needed very little repairs at all. Great amp, great tubes!

That might be a good idea. It looks like you have mostly poly caps, which could be just fine, but maybe room for improvement. Maybe change C3 from a disc to a silver mica or poly, and try some different values for it and C4. I would also make sure that all of your electrolytics are good.

Thanks for the schematic. :)

BTW, have you tried the Accordian input? It is attenuated compared to the guitar input.

Maybe I should just put this chassis back in the original cab and sell it, rather than mod it into something it's not. It's a good amp for some types of vintage rock, breaks up nice. Won't do "Rock Candy" but it'll do "Fortunate Son". (Vintage rock to me is 60's and 70's)

I doubt that Ronnie would see much potential in this amp but it might be ideal for Fogerty, especially with a Rick 330.
