Mike,

It's the extra current that the 5408 passes that stiffens up the PSU. Provided the PT is capable of delivering it.

The beefier diodes can handle more current, but there will be no more current draw than the circuit already demands, so there will be no more current delivered with different diodes. The 1N4007s are not limiting the current delivered, they just can't handle as much current as beefier diodes, and therefore would short sooner if too much current were drawn in the circuit, but there will be no sag due to the diodes. The diodes are sized to be able to handle as much current as the circuit demands, no sag. Rectifier tubes are a different story, each different type does have different voltage drop, and that supplied voltage can sag even more and limit the current delivered to the supply. Diodes do not act in the same way that tubes do, the diodes deliver a steady voltage regardless of the type.

I had a SilverFace Vibrolux Reverb for about 10 years. I swapped the rectifier tube and got a little more clean headroom. Forget what I used. Bought it on the advise of my amp tech. The tube went with the amp when I sold it so I won't be able to positively identify which one it was. 5U4 to 5AR4, maybe? Can't remember. I realize the re-issue has a solid state rectifier but would it not be possible to desolder it and swap in something stiffer? Forgive me if that's not feasible as I have never heard of such a mod myself but it seemed to work for me in the tube universe and this question has me wondering if it could be done in the solid state world. Did we discuss this once before?

The problem here lies deeper in that the "Custom" Vibrolux is not a reissue of anything, it has had it's circuitry "fiddled with" with in a manner that changes it's characteristic tone rather dramatically from a trad Vibrolux. Fender was quite up-front about it not being a reissue, even though it's cosmetically dressed as a Blackface amp, it isn't one, no more than the NOS Tweed Blues Junior is a "Tweed" amp or "NOS".

Thanks, shimmi. I have often wondered about that.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

thanks for all the advice everybody it is much appreciated... so i AM going to buy a mic for it but something i have noticed recently is that as i have been breaking this amp in it seems to be breaking up sooner and sooner.... is that a thing or is that just me?? and so my other question is if i did have the money for a mod kit which one gets me more clean headroom and with the fattest scooped warm tone possible? thanks again

The speakers are breaking in. Altho it won't be a drastic change... if the point of breakup has changed drastically, something's wrong.

SM57 is arguably the mic of rock and roll and a great investment for guitar amp micing, vocals, drums, horns, acoustic guitar... I've had mine since '87 and still works fine.

However, when i reach for a guitar amp mic these days, I go straight past the Shure and use my Sennheiser e906. Sounds a lot better than a SM57, and for tilt-back Fenders, there's no easier way to mic it - loop the mic cord through the handle, and drape on the grille at the sweet spot. No mic stands, less room taken up, and the super cardioid design means less of other sources get into your amp signal.

It is more expensive than an SM57, but worth it. Don't be fooled by its cheaper cousin the e609 -I owned one and it sounds the same as an SM57. Save up for the e906. I now have 2 and will be buying a 3rd this year for when we have a 3rd guitarist at gigs.
