Just bought my first tube amp and am fairly new to playing. Simple question that can hopefully be easily answered. I bought the new "68 Custom Deluxe Reverb Reissue amp. When I am done playing and switch the amp to standby before shutting it off, I get a very loud pop from the speaker. The pop will happen with or without my guitar plugged in. It won't make the pop noise cold, but if I let the amp heat up for about a minute, it will make the popping noise every time the amp is switched to standby.

Is this normal or do I have a problem with the amp? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

It's prototypical of many amps, both contemporary and vintage, but neither normal nor desirable. Likely the result of audible fly-back effect from the B+ power supply due to a sleazy diode in the biasing circuit. A possible secondary cause is worn contacts within the standby switch which may cause arcing when the switch is thrown. The latter is more common with older amps.

Thanks! I think I will take it in to my local fender dealer and have them take a look. It's brand new and still under warranty. If it's not normal, I probably need to get it fixed.

Don't use the standby switch to turn off the amp. Just turn the power switch off, then turn the standby switch to standby(to allow for the next warm up/use).
If your just taking a short brake between playing(less than 15 minutes), turn the volume to zero.
A break more than 15 minutes, turn it off.

I've had my '68 CDR for a year and a half and it has always had that annoying pop when put in standby. I can only presume it won't hurt anything, but not sure about that.

Both of my '65 DR reissues do this to some extent, one more than the other, and it can be a problem as I run direct into the P.A.
So when we take a 15 to 20 minute break, I turn the volumes to zero before switching to standby. No pop.
And, yes, when shutting down for the night, just switch the power off. No need to go to standby first. The downside being you must remember to put the standby switch back to off as well (both switches "down") before operating the next time.
Free Unsolicited Advice:
Never, ever, plug or unplug the Reverb/Vibrato footswitch while the amp is active. Make sure it's in standby, or you will get a nasty pop loud enough to blow the speaker.
