hello folks! I have a Fender Deluxe 85 and I´ve found some sound problems on it: clean and drive channels sounds too weak when i plug my guitar and pedals, specially at low notes and frecuencies. It´s hard to explain, but It´s too difficult to pull some strings making a solo, or playing son power chords: poor intesity and sustain. I think that the problem is some preamp parts or the speaker because I´ve plugged it to another cabinet throught the preamp out jack and it sounds awesome. Loud, clean and powerful. I´m wondering the next issues:

1. Need to change the fuse.
2. Polarity in speaker
3. Speaker broken.

Does anybody know what is the problem? thanks in advance.

Cheers!

Hi ivanalexxey,

When you plugged the Preamp Out into another amp, you are using the output section of the other amp, which sounds like a better/more powerful amp. Many SS amps do sound weak by comparison. Maybe nothing wrong with your amp other than it is just a weak-ass amp.

thank you for your kind response. I meant that this amp is a former bad $@! powerful amp. Nowadays is a weak $@! amp, as you said. The red knob amps from fender are awesome: they´re 65w RMS, made in usa in the 80´s. I cannot find an explanation about this weakness. However, thank you again for your explanation about the preamp out. I´ll connect the speaker in another amp in order to test it.

cheers!

OK, I didn't realize that it was good before. It is hard to say, but yes, try another speaker, that could be the problem. If not the speaker, you might have to open it up and do some checking of the circuit. Being a solid-state amp, it isn't so easy to diagnose problems.

It almost sounds like one of your output transistors has gone bad. I'm not sure about good techs to diagnose this and replace with proper matched pair of transistors, if necessary. Offset and bias prolly needs re-adjusting, if replacement is needed.
