You mean the discontinued Deluxe VM (like the Bandmaster VM) or the new 68 Custom Deluxe? (both are part of the VM series.)

yea- the deluxe vm combo.

I have some extra tubes sitting around (ecc83, 5751, 12at7). I am looking to have a little more classic rock crunch than metal sound, and my reading about this tells me I can do this by changing a pre-amp tube.

I am not sure which one to change. I know there are only 2, but which one is for channel 2 gain? I know they indicate by v1, v2 etc. but there is no indication of this anywhere on the amp.

V1 and V2 are the power tubes, V3 is the preamp tube, V4 is the phase inverter. All are shown in the schematic and chassis layout:

You're welcome.

I don't think changing tubes will have much of an effect in this amp, though, as the drive and distortion seems to come from the solid state circuitry.

I put the 5751 in v3. seems to change channel 2 more to my liking. maybe I'm just hearing things, but if it works, why not?

Hey freddyb, I'm a newbie here, and have the Bandmaster VM but I was thinking of trying a Sovtek 12ax7lps for the phase inverter, as it's highly touted in that spot, and will go for a JJ 5751 for the drive channel in the other preamp tube to calm it down a bit. Other users have mentioned it's best to keep a 12ax7 as a PI in this amp, which makes sense because I want to get the signal to those power tubes as much as possible. I think I'm also going to get the TAD 6L6WGC-STR for power amp tubes. I haven't ordered them yet, as I was debating between those and the 5881 Tung-Sol Reissues, but I wasn't sure they would be able to handle the VM's plate voltage, although I understand it's low, does anyone know? I found it on the schematic once, and then couldn't find it the other night. I'm also starting another big thread about trying some tone stack mods and I'm hoping bluesky636 can chime in, because I've been learning from him and reading his posts as a lurker here for a while! Thanks.
