I recently picked up a Blues Jr NOS in great condition, except for a little wear on the corners on the bottom. The tweed is frayed in a small spot on one front corner and the other has a dark spot I cannot remove. I was thinking about adding four Fender amp corner covers, the chrome three screw version. Is this a good idea or will it ruin the value of the amp? Does anyone ever add amp corner covers to tweeds? It looks like the tweed amps never have them installed so I need some guidance before I go this route.

Thanks

Peavey do that in their "Classic" line ;

I like tweed Fender amp as original , no chrome corner. I look better .This is my opinion.

Yeah, thanks your response. I saw the Peavy tweed with corners. I am caught in the middle on doing the BJ. I don't want it to look like a Peavy but maybe this is just evolution and economics? Newer more expensive Fender amps use them, so why not a BJ? I'm still on the fence and looking for what you guys think. I guess I was not clear in my posting, as what I really ment was corner protectors on Fender tweed amps.

Yes why not BJ with corner , it is up to you . Will it loose is value ? I don't think so .

Is Fender want the look of "old Tweed Amp " for the BJ ?

Anything MIM is not going to hold much resale value regardless of what you do to it.

Ha, good point. I guess I just not want it to be totally worthless. And I figured one with corner caps is better than one with frayed tweed? Then again, I will probably keep it for a good long time so it probably is a moot point. But still, interesting to see what people have to say about the concept. There may be someone with a USA made version or a blues deluxe with the same question.

No vintage tweed amps ever had corner protectors (they hadn't yet been invented by Leo) and that's the visual vibe that FMIC was shooting for when they released these retro-look tweed models. Adding corners defeats the entire concept, just as changing handle types, or swapping out the chickenhead knobs.

JMOOC......

Another option would be to have the cabinet lacquered (if it is not already). This is what Fender did to Tweed amps back in the day, before as Arjay stated, Leo invented the metal corners. It certainly strengthens the tweed and helps to prevent the fraying, while not preventing it completely though. This certainly won't hurt the resale value either as it is both a practical and aesthetic enhancement.

FWIW

In any case, the fraying tweed is known colloquially as "mojo" and it adds character.

Thanks everyone for all the input. Its the NOS so it is already lacquered I think. The fraying is caused by a slight scuff on one corner. I used some clear fabric glue and smoothed the fabric out but you can still tell there is a scuff there. The other lower front corner has some discoloration that I lightened considerably but could not remove. The more I have thought about it the more I think I will leave it as is. It doesn't really bother me and I got it for home use so it will not be traveling anyway.

I got it from a guy who was using it in a worship service band. He was asking $350 but I got it for $290 and then sold a Epi Valve Jr head/cabinet combo on CL in one day for $220, so my net in the BJ is only $70. It is stamped June 2011 but the reverb tank is marked Oct 2012 so I think he had the reverb tank replaced under warranty, as it is the OEM version. It also has had some tubes replaced but I need to pull the back off to see all the specifics. I know for sure V2 is a 12AT7 but not sure of the brand. V1 and V3 are 12AX7 EH tubes. The V4 power tube shows some wear but V5 does not so I am not sure if it is a matched set or not. So bottom line is I may pick up a new set of tubes so why spend money for corner covers if I can get along without them.

Thinking about a set from Eurotubes. Any opinions on them? Maybe the low gain blues setup or the max headroom setup? Seems like a good price for what you get and I read good reviews about the guy that runs the operation.

I think you've made a wise decision.
