I can't speak to the tone, but the C-Rex is a very efficient speaker at 102db, and should be a good deal louder than the stock C12K at 99.1 db

3db is ALOT in relation to guitar speakers, and how the ear perceives the volume.

I'd advise removing the chassis and laying the cabinet face down on a clean blanket or bedspread when swapping speakers -- easier to line up the studs, with less chance of damage.

Amen to that! You can't imagine how many brand new or recently reconed speakers have damaged surrounds, done by techs who should have known better.

Seens amps that had strange new OD tones after amp was "fixed" by a tech. Only to find a damaged surround of a "new" speaker placed into the cab --- where the tech did not notice the damage done.

Also, do NOT honk down on the nuts holding the speaker(s) onto the board. Finger snug, even torque, is what is needed.

Good luck!

25 inch/pounds is sufficient -- roughly a quarter turn past finger-snug.

Use a deep-well socket, not a crescent wrench or pliers.

As an owner of the C Rex in my HRDIII, I have only good things to say about it. I also have a emi hemp speaker in my SCX2 (Lil Buddy) and my Bug V5(820H). I love the tone that hemp imparts to what comes through it.

Caution: Hemp cones can be a gateway drug.

The hemp-cone Tone Tubby is also a tasty speaker.

They are the only ones making a hemp bass speaker, that I have found.

If I get some work........ :D

Tone Tubby makes the cones for Eminence. I wonder if there are different grades?
I hear TT has recently come up with a very thin hemp cone that is supposedly auditory heaven. I expect they will hold on to that design for awhile if they release it.

The speaker fasteners are 5/16" kep nuts, fitting a commonly-sized socket.

What you are facing here is why I was glad to get my HRD stock with the C Rex. Not that changing a speaker is a big deal but, having to remove the chassis is a pain in the butt. I was fortunate I only had to remove my tubes to get my Lil Buddy into my SCX2.

Take your time with the speaker swap. Haste makes waste.

Pulling the chassis from a vintage blackface Fender combo is the easiest task in the world when it comes to disassembling amps. I can do it in my sleep. Those who have difficulty with this procedure probably shouldn't be working on any amp.

Good point here. It is my experience that the opposable thumb gene has not worked its way completely into the gene pool in some instances.

My comment does NOT apply to the OP.

Unless, they resemble that remark.

There are plenty of youtube vids posted that detail much of the scut work required to service a Fender amp (and many other brands as well). Bravo Zulu to Algore for inventing the internet, it's a wonderful tool.
