Make sure that the V3 is balanced, which ever one you put in. I got JJ Hi Gains with gold pins in all three preamp spots, so far it sounds great on the clean channel which is all I use.

Also go to Eurotubes and look at the how to BIAS videos

Thanks for the link. A balanced V3 it is.

Might I suggest a C Rex to you. :D I can hear something common to all of my hemp speakers, and that is deeper tone, resonance and definition. The definition can be a double edged sword because any slop is very defined.

I have also never heard bass notes have such authority. Again, this could be a drawback for some. As much as I have been playing my amp, it has days if not weeks before it is properly broken in. My other broken in speaker plays a little more gently with the bass frequencies. It is well worth the effort spent, IMO.

Perhaps I should start a new topic with this picture. It is a modern next to a classic. The number for this deluxe is AB763. I would love for someone to tell me more about this amp. I picked it up for one hundred dollars in '74? at an auction for a closing studio. It is now in the possession of an ex-wife but, still a close friend. I did try them out side by side. Haven't looked at the tubing. An Eminence Delta speaker is in there. Not a current model as named.

You know the drill, modwiz......we need numbers. Trannies, speakers, pots, serial number, the whole can of whupass. Detailed chassis pics would be a big help as well.

From the single photo thus posted the amp appears to be a mid/late '65, a '66, or an early '67 (the non-verb Deluxe was discontinued in the spring of that year).

Since AB763 is the model number on the tube chart, where is the serial number? Original speaker is long gone, I think I remember a ceramic in there. Since the amp is no longer technically mine, pulling the chassis would be rude without permission I doubt I would get. These people know me and know that I am not an amp tech. I did like the sound, very nuch. A galssier clean than the HRD. I might like the crunch of my clean channel better but, there is a difference. It is almost too bad I heard this once-my-amp next to my HRD. It is hard to forget certain things.

Maybe stamped on the back of chassis. Like this Pro Reverb.

That is what impressed me with the Lil Buddy, the crisp bass notes. I am gonna try the Cannabis Rex sometime early in the new year. I hate to change out the speaker on my HRD as you have to remove the amp which tears up the metal foil they use for isolation. But I did it 2x before so I guess 1 more time won't hurt, I simply put in metal tape to cover the foil tears.

But the bass tones of the Lil Buddy in the SCX2 both with and without distortion are stellar in my estimation. Also the Eminence Tonespotter in the HRD is also one great sounding speaker as well. I am also tempted to just leave the HRD as is.

Perhaps giving into temptation will serve you well here. Unless the suspense gets the better of you.

I tried my overdrive channel again today on my HRD, and lo and behold with a little fiddling with the amp a bit I was getting some great tones out of it. So I think it is relatively nicer than I previously thought.

Watch that presence control. It can get ice-picky if used to excess, especially in conjunction with the bright switch.

Modwiz...Not sure how I missed this NAD of yours, but Wow, that HRD is a looker that is for sure. Congrats. I can't add anything that hasn't already been put forth, but sounds like you are digging the amp and tweeking the tubage in the right way. Enjoy!

It is a very professional-looking rig. With the right tube tweaks and some reliability mods it ought to serve its purpose well.

I turn the presence control all the way off on any amp that I own that has one, I also do not use the bright switch at all. I also have a volume box in my efx loop, and I turn that down a bit and that helps mitigate the trebles. So far so good.
