Anybody have any opinions, experience w/these. esp. in a DRRI? I'm most concerned w/possible technical problems or reliability issues that might arise. I understand that most SS rectifier replacements require that you keep the amp on standby while powering up, which I do anyway, but I'm not willing to risk it. It just doesn't sound safe enough. But these Webers supposedly emulate rectifier tubes.

Why replace a glass tube by a SS rectifier "wich "emulate tube ? You need to check and adjust bias if needed with this new SS rectifier . Do you know how ? Or do you know a quaified tech .

If not broken , don't fix it

Yes I can bias the amp myself. Supposedly the SS rectifiers are more reliable. Other than that I don't know of any other advantage over the tube. Thus the questions. ATM I have the JJ 5AR4 which has been going strong for 2 years. So far no complaints w/it.

You may get a change in the tone if you go from tube to solid-state rectification. The amp prolly have a bit tighter bass, faster transient response, and less "sag." So you may lose some of the "tube magic" gain from the sag of the tube rectifier.

interesting thread... got me thinking, would a SS rectifier (like the Weber Copper Cap, I know they make one that has no sag) help to firm up the bottom end in the PR/PRRI, since a large reason the amp has a loose bottom is due to the circuit?

I know the Stokes mod is supposed to greatly improve this, but I see Stokes no longer recommends it, and have read people reporting they have blown transformers (one guy went thru THREE) because of the Stokes mod...

Fresh cap can & a good speaker really helps, in my R&R of old Princeton Reverbs. A lot of the Bluesy, rolled-off bass of the PR is due to the concertina phase inverter. This PI utilizes 1/2 of the 12AX7 duo-triode (high gain, but low current swing versus the 12AT7).

The PR benefits greatly with a good, high efficiency speaker. This will definitely help the bass. And the tone projection of the amp.
