Just got an awesoem little amp...frontman 25r in red. I love it so far for what it does and what it is supposed to be.

However, I have found that the reverb is feeding back anytime I have it turned up past 3.

Why do I have it past 3, you might ask? I play surf! I do'nt ahve it to 10 as that is just way too much to sound clean...so I usually play at 8. However, during testing for feedback, if I set reverb to 0, it goes away. Any time it's past 3...feedback occurs.

Anybody experience this or know how to fix it? It's only 2 days old. :)

Maybe the tank mounting screws are too tight, the mounting should not be solid to the cab. With such a new amp, you should check your warranty.

Actually, the reverb tank of the 25R is screwed directly to the sheet metal amp chassis. It does not "float" in a vinyl bag like a "real" Fender amp. The tank is a small (about 12" long) two-spring tank. I've never experienced any feedback from my 25R regardless of how any of the controls are set. There is nothing that can be repaired easily in the amp. Return it under warranty for a new one.

No rubber grommets between tank and chassis?

Just checked.

The spring plate is suspended by four small springs from the plastic base plate which is attached to the chassis with two sheet metal screws. Its possible that one or more of the suspending springs came unattached during shipping but I would think you would hear the spring plate rattling around inside the cab. The spring plate has two reverb springs and is only 8" long, not 12" as I originally thought. It all sits wide open in the chassis, no real "tank" per se.

This applies to Accutronics Reverb Tanks.

Posted from another post I responded to:

I have found the cure to my reverb feedback issue i.e. when the reverb knob was turned passed 5 it would slowly build up with a high pitch feedback even when all other knobs were right down. I have been paying close attention to everyone elses issues and attempts at fixing it, and after doing some comparisons with tubes/cables and various unplugged reverb combinations, adding foam padding, someone suggested in a forum that their reverb might be microphonic. Whether a reverb tank can be microphonic in itself I cannot tell you, but it made me want to take a closer look at the physical reverb circuit to rule out any possible cause.

Looking on Accutronics website they suggest that the orientation that Fender has chosen for the SS and other combo Amp reverb tanks is the least desirable, as this causes gravity to act on the reverb spring and push the ferite beads (there are 4 in mine - one on each end of each spring) in the transformer to sit real close to one side and not dead centre as intended. Now does this make it more sensitive, possibly as smaller movements will be detected easier but bigger ones will be constrained physicaly. Accutronics also state that they custom set the position of these beads based on the customers mounting requirements.

So I took a close look at mine and after a long hard check and fiddle I found that one bead was sitting way too close to the reverb transformer plate, and with gravity added it was REALLY close. So I decided to adjust it and found that you can't bend or solder it into its correct position as that would be too risky. I eventualy found that with some small pliers I could rotate the copper stud that holds this bead and spring until it was orientated such that gravity pulls this bead more central. I then put a dab of superglue on the copper stud to hold it from rotating back.

I am pleased to say that I tested it last night at full reverb volume and while before it would feedback instantly and consistantly at even a 5 setting, I could not get it to feedback at all even at 10.

thank you for the tips, guys.

While that fix seems plausible...and workable...I think I'm calling Fender on this one and see how they work their warranty. I've only had it for 2 days. :)

That's always a sensible option.

Fender will tell you to contact the selling dealer first (says so in your warranty sheet which you should have read first) The dealer will most likely replace the amp with a new one as Fender does not typically repair the cheap solid state amps as it is not worth their time and expense.

Yes.
I did call them and they said they're discontinuing hte frontman line.

they gave me the number of a guitar tech over 1 hour away that could look into it.
But they advised to return it to the store. It was their last frontman, so I'd have to choose something else.

They recommended the new Champion line.

Are those hybrids?
I already have a VOX vt40+ and it's awesome...this seems to be similar.

I also saw an Orange CR35LDX used for $99 on their used site....but not sure if I'd like an Orange or not.

Very few reviews online regarding the Champino 20...I'd prefer the 40, but only have about $100 ish to spend right now on it as it's a gift from my mother for xmas...can't be picky and wait for somerthing bigger. Plus, it's just a practcie amp.

If it is the last one and you like the amp, it might be worth to go to the tech and have him check the four small springs in the photo to make sure nothing came loose.

Do a search in this forum. There are several threads on the new Champion amps already.

A bit of luck.

Just called my GC, and they actually received a shipment of the frontman 25r's yesterday, so I can go in and see if they all do this or not.

While there, I will test the Champion 20 and maybe a few others and see what I want to do.

Either way, at least I have options.
