I received my 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb from Musicians Friend yesterday.
Right out of the box the amp was extremely microphonic. Tube replacement took care of that.
But I can barely hear the reverb and tremolo on the custom channel, works great on the vintage (BF) channel. Any idea what's causing this ?

Thanks very much for your time
Knut

Hi SunKing,

Do you have a 12AX7 in V1, or a lower gain tube? You might try another tube in V1, a known good 12AX7. Maybe even swap V1 and V2 for comparison. V1 is for the Custom channel, V2 for the Vintage channel.

+1

Swapping bottles is a no-cost diagnostic procedure that's easy to perform.

Appreciate your suggestions – thanks!
Already tried a different tube in the custom channel, also tried to swap the tubes today, but no difference.

There must be some other signal loss in the Custom channel, because the reverb circuit is exactly the same for both channels, inserted at exactly the same point for both channels, so I can't imaging it being a reverb problem. I would have a close look at the circuit around the V1 tube, Plate resistors, bypass caps, grid resistors, tone control circuit, volume pot, etc. My first guess would be the input jack or resistors, maybe the electrolytic bypass cap C1. It is hard to believe that you don't notice anything else wrong with the Custom channel except the weak reverb. Are the tone controls, and volume set the same for each channel when comparing?

If I did not have ship it over the Atlantic I would've done that right away, but as that is a hassle and time consuming I rather try to fix it if possible.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, volume and tone controls are set the same for both channels. I will say the custom channel sound quite dark compared the the vintage channel, and maybe a tad lover in volume, but that can be perceived because it's darker sounding ...

Yes cheaper to fix it on your country .

Shimmilou , I can't find the shematic of this new amp . Do you have it ? Or it is a copy of Silverface 1968 model ? Why "Custom " ?

SunKing; Or that is the way it should sound

Looking at the schematic, I can see that the Custom channel is darker and less volume than the Vintage channel. The only difference between the two channels is the tone stack. Of course, there are some differences between the domestic and export models, so I wonder if what you hear is normal due to some stupid RoHS nonsense, such as no OP1 on the export model, among other differences. :?:

Although I initially dismissed a reverb problem, on the off chance, try another tube in the reverb driver V3, which is a 12AT7, but even a 12AX7 would work for a trial. Stranger things have happened.

Changing the reverb driver did not change anything. It's not an export model, think it was demo-used.
Would you be so kind and share the schematic with me as well.

Thanks

If reverb work fine on Vintage channel , reverb tubes and reverb circuit are alright.

I agree with Shimmilou ;

The only tube used for the Custom channel is V1 . All other tubes are common to both channels except V2 which is for Custon channel only.

If reverb is not working properly on Custom channel check V1 , put a new good tube , try V2. That's only you can do by yourself . But you try that with no success.

This amp must be waranty by Fender ? Unless Musician friend ia not a fender dealer ? Do you have a Fender service center in your area ?

You need to see a tech .

By the way , at your country , wall outlet voltage are 120 or 240 volts ?

I've written Musicians Friend presenting my problem. I got the amp this week so yes, it's under warranty. But I was hoping it would be an easy fix not having to ship it back. I'll see what they answer before I start poking around the V1 circuit.

We have 220-230V here in Norway. I use a step-down/up transformer which I also use with some of my other amps/gear with no problems.

Thanks for your time guys! I'm happy for any advice/tip I get.

Are you sure this step down transformer is alright for THIS amp ?

Probably not your problem ( or a problem for now ) but to be sure . I don't know your knowledge about using stept down transformer.

Is your frequency ( of wall outlet voltage ) is same as require by the Custon Deluxe Reverb ?
What is your wall outlet frequencey ? 50 Hz , 60 Hz ?
What is the frequency require by the amp ? Only 60 Hz ( in North America) or 50Hz to 60 Hz ?
It is wright on the back of the amp.

Is you step down Xfrm are enough powerfull for the Custom Deluxe reverb ? Electrical watts ?
The Custom deluxe may need something different than your other gear ?

That's exactly what I was thinking about, 50 or 60Hz in Norway?! :?:

This can play a big role. Voltage wise step down is usually fine as long as power of the transformer is adequate, but the Hz issue....?!??
