I'm in need of advise concerning an amp!!! Thinkin' about a 12" spkr, in some kind of amp with distortion capabilities. My boy will get my tube amps when he is older, if he finds the guitar to his liking. But for now, a solid state amp is probably the way to go. Just out of touch with the SS group of amps. I'd appreciate any opinions. You know the situation.... he's gonna plug in and want to get the goods!!! Thanks, Art

I've seen Frontman 65R's going for less than a hundred. Sixty watts, 12-inch speaker, decent clean channel, passable overdrive and reverb.

I'd also advise the Mustang series. One can get a lot of very good tones from it. I own a Mustang 4, v1 and will only sell it because I have to do it in order to get my first tube amp (Supersonic 60, testing it out tomorrow or on Saturday, can't wait :D ).
Mustang II should be more than enough for him, for now, and he's gonna have a very wide range of sounds he can get. Although he might not do any presets himself yet, I am sure you have plenty of understanding to help him out a bit and get overdone presets just sound awesome :) It's basically a multieffects unit within an amp.
If you do want a very simple solid-state amp - go with Frontman series. I owned a 212R and was satisfied with it :)

Buy it second hand , there are lots of beginner amp on the market . Try it before . If it work at the seller home it will work long time.

Thanks folks!!! I'll have to get my elbow down to one of the music stores and check these suggestions out. I did ask him if he'd be interested in an acoustic or electric. Electric was the call. I'd prefer the acoustic(my first guitar was a 3/4 Martin), but this is 2013-not 1959! Steve, I'll have to ask him about the artists, he likes. Yeah, Louis, I'm listening to all of you guys!!! OT... thinkin' that Squire Cyclone might be OK ? Even if I have to do some fret dressing and board-shoulder work, to make it more comfortable, that's cool. Of course, it has to have a whammy bar!!! Thanks again !!!! Art
