I finally tried some 5751s on the clean channel, and settled on a GE 5-Star, and it took the edge off of the sound, now perfectly clean with single-coils, and quite a bit better with hum-buckers than with a 12AX7. I am now enjoying the clean channel with the 5751 more than before.

When I first got my amp, and pulled the tube from the drive channel, I noticed noise on the clean channel, so it seems possible that the drive channel tube can have an affect on the clean channel (or vice-versa). In any event, try substitution for each tube to be sure.

OK, thanks.
BTW, I checked this morning and it occurs on both channels. I didn't open it to check tubes, and I'm reluctant to fiddle too much with the tubes if the sockets are pcb mounted? Are they? And if so, is the board thick or flimsy?

It appears that the preamp sockets are board mounted, I haven't looked at the board, so not sure about it's construction. Based on everything that I know about B* amps, I wouldn't worry about changing tubes, and there is no flexing of the board when pushing on the tubes, it feels solid. Of course I will take the amp apart sometime and check everything. I usually take apart most amps when I get them, but a few get played for awhile first. :)

The one that I ordered during the Presidents day sale came in. HT Metal 5H, which has the same controls as the HT-5RH, but this one has much more gain. The gain channel even sounds powerful with single coils, and the Fat 50s sound terrific. This thing is a beast, probably the loudest 5 watt amp that I've ever heard. :D
