Greetings all and Happy Holidays,

I have question I am sure has been asked many times - what speaker can I put in my Blues Junior Tweed to improve the sound.

I currently have BJR III Tweed with Jensen C12N. I play a Strat - Sienna Sunburst HSS - (Fat Fifities Single coils with Diamondback Humbucker.

I have had BillM mods done that include a new transformer, presence knob, basic kit, and volume taper.

Amp sounds pretty good but when I listen to speaker comparisons the Jensen always sound hollow compared to other speakers. So i figure a replacement would improve the sound even more.

Looking to play blues, a lot of cleans but also be able put some distortion through it (I have a Fulltone Full Drive 2 to push it a bit).

Been looking at the Texas Heat, Cannabis Rex, Celestion Heritage 12H, and Swamp Thang. Want to have smooth highs but don't want to lose the chime altogether.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
john

I have a BJ with the same mods as yours and I would recommend the CRex speaker. It will be a very nice addition to the mods you already have and a vast improvement over the Jensen. I have also tried the Texas Heat and that is also a very nice speaker in the BJ but I felt the CRex was a slightly better match for that amp, actually it works with that amp so well it's like it was designed to suit.
The other mod I did was adding a parallel extension speaker jack, the Heyboer Output Tranny (I'm assuming you put in a TO20 or TO22) you have will happily work with an additional 8 ohm speaker. Adding an extension cab transforms the amp and overcomes the size limitation of the original cab. It becomes a totally different amp at that point, I was surprised at how good it sounds.

So my vote goes to the CRex as first choice, Texas Heat a close second.

Thank you very much for your feedback, especially since you are working with the same equipment.

+1

Neither the Celestion nor the Swamp Thang are what I'd regard as sonically "bright" speakers -- both lack the shiny crispness I normally associate with a Fender amp.

I'm with Snowy but I think I'd give the "pole position" to the Texas Heat, with the Cannabis Rex as a close runner-up.

+2 as far as speaker choice, but I would suggest using an extension cab and not using the internal speaker. That amp will sound 1,000 times better through an extension cab or getting a larger cabinet for the Blues Jr. Seems like you're experiencing the dreaded boxiness of the amp. That cabinet is just way too small to let that speaker breathe.

Got the C Rex for Xmas - now just have to wait until December 25th.

But just as an FYI - I do not find my BJr to be boxy at all.

Nice work, one less speaker for Santa to lug around on the evening of the 24th.
