New to the community here and sure this question has already been asked, but I figured I'd ask anyways. A while back I purchased a 60th Anniversary Edition Blues Junior from eBay. Love the amp, sounds great. But I wanted to see what other kind of tones I could get from it by swapping the tubes out. The guy I bought it from threw in a couple of sets of tubes in the deal and was wondering if they were worth swapping in. So today I popped off the back cover and took the tubes out. It consisted of 2 JJ EL84's, 1 Groove Tube 12AX7M in the V1 position, a Fender (Sovtek) 12AX7WC in the V2, and (surprisingly) a Marshall Gold Label ECC83 in V3. The sound I was getting from the amp in this configuration wasn't bad at all, but I want to try something new. Right now I have another pair of JJ EL84's, a pair of Groove Tube EL84's, and 3 Electro-Harmonix 12AX7EH's on hand. A little poking around the internet said that GT12AX7M was a "Mullard reissue" and wasn't all that great, the Sovtek 12AX7WC is very standard and usually good for the V1 position, the Marshall ECC83 was cheap, and the Electro-Harmonix tubes were very good. So my question to anyone with any knowledge on tubes is what is your recommendation on the tubes I should throw into my amp?

Thanks!

-Mark

Hi MJJ92,

Put in the tubes that sound best to you. You said that you "loved the amp, sounds great", yet the internet said a tube that you have "wasn't all that great"? They are your ears, try swapping each of the tubes that you have into each position and see what each sounds like. Try the different brands of preamp tubes in each position, some will sound better in certain positions.

In case you weren't sure, V1 is the first position on the right, looking at the back of the amp, and you count right to left, V1 and V2 being preamp, V3 is the PI, V4 and V5 output tubes. It is best to check the bias when changing output tubes, but the stock BJr has no adjustment pot for the bias, so maybe start by trying your preamp and PI tubes. V1 will typically have the greatest impact on tone.

You have a nice variety of tubes to start with, so have fun tube rolling!

Bill M is kind of a guru on those amps:
