a friend's vm 40 has a rattling sound coming from it. doesn't happen right away, but after the tubes warm up. sounds kind of "glassy" to me. I checked, and all tubes seems to be seated properly, and as far is I can see, nothing is touching anything it shouldn't.

any ideas, or is it time for a trip to the shop?

It might be the Velcro-affixed grill frame.

Here's how some clown fixed his......

Not very pretty, I'm afraid.

good one arjay

we went over the amp and made sure all the screws were tight. the tubes seemed secure in the sockets, and we turned the amp around. the rattling seemed to come from the tube area, and we checked to make sure the tube retainers are ok.

no sure if this means a tube is going bad, or if there is another issue.

any ideas will be appreciated

Using a pot holder or oven mitt, grasp each tube one at a time and see if the rattling stops.

Yeah......somebody neglected to tell that clueless sap that just because they're "fender washers" doesn't mean that they belong on a Fender amp.

:P

I checked it out further. turned the amp around, and touched the tube (with gloves on of course) and the rattle went away. I checked both tube holders, and they were fine.

I notice that some tube holders I see have rubber or plastic on them that touch the tubes. is that to stop the rattling? if so, I need to find out where to get some.

any other tips?

Shouldn't the onus of curing the rattle be borne by your "friend". After all, it's his amp isn't it?

Sounds like it might well be as simple as replacing that tube, or pair of tubes if is an output tube rattling.
